I applied to several colleges and one of my top choices waitlisted me.

I was told I wouldn't hear back from them until June. In the meantime, I enrolled at one of my other schools that way I had another option. Although I enrolled, I would much prefer to attend the other college.

Today I received a call from the college that waitlisted me wanting to discuss my decisions.

When I call this college back would it be appropriate to let them know I am currently enrolled at another school, however I would prefer to attend their school? Also, money matters are a large part of my college decision. Would it be appropriate to ask how much money is available for me to receive and compare that to the other college?

Advice?

Thank you for the responses ahead of time.

Yes and Yes.

Everyone on a WL has put a deposit down for another school, you have to because there are no guarantees that a WL position will come through. They probably know that you prefer them, or you wouldn’t have stayed on the WL, but it couldn’t hurt to say so.

Getting accepted is the first step, but you have to be able to afford a college, and the schools know this. If not offered, ask them to send you your FA package to evaluate before you give them a decision. They should understand that you and your parents need to discuss the financial part before you can accept.

And if the financial aid offer is too low for you to attend, don’t be afraid to call back and explain that they are still your first choice but you have an offer from school x that is significantly better (assuming it is). Some schools will match or at least sweeten an initial offer if you have a much better one in hand and they know it’s the difference between a yes and a no.
