Im a junior now. I got really really bad gpa in my first semester ( C- in AP gov, C- in AP Calc, D in AP Micro, and C- in honors chem). I wonder should i switch to regular courses in next semester? I have okay SAT/ACT scores, but weak GPA. So, what should i do in my next semeter?
Thx so much for ur advices!

No, don’t switch. Colleges see that as you giving up. Try your hardest to raise or improve your grades for second semester, it’ll give you something to write about in your college essay, such as: i struggled blah blah but overcame them and improved. I almost dropped AP Euro last year but didn’t and passed with a C. And honors chem i passed. Just try your best to raise them!

Thx so mush for ur advice. I will try my best in next semester.

LOL, don’t listen to that guy. If you’re getting THAT bad grades you better drop dude. It looks A LOT better getting good grades in regular classes over crap grades in AP classes. The only reasons I see why you might keep the courseload would be because a) you didn’t try at all first semester and just f’ed up bad or b) something out of your control happened that made you get bad grades. But that doesn’t seem to be the case. You should really talk to your parents/ counselor about this as well. See what they suggest.

Ok, im really confused right now. And, let me explain more about my situation. I got those bad grades because i was so addicted to League of Legends (an online video game), so i used most of my time on that game. As result, my grades got rlly bad. But, im sure that i can get B if i study more. So…?

I’m not here to argue with that “guy”, but honestly do not drop them. I talked to my counselor and she said it looks bad. Thats why i never dropped any class and i ended up passing. If you can raise it, go ahead and do it, it will look good! Games are addicting, but they can wait.

I’m sorry, polllyyy if I sounded rude. The thing is, C’s and D’s are no laughing matter. If they were B’s and C’s thats different a matter. And honestly, if what you are saying is the case, that colleges like AP classes better than reg classes in all cases, than everybody would be taking AP classes instead of regular classes. That is not the case though. The number one thing that colleges look for is your GPA. At the top college level, it is important to have a strong courseload, like you have mentioned, but there is no point to that if your GPA sucks. In the end though, its up to the OP. If he thinks he can succeed in these classes, than please, try your best. Though, if I were you, redsunfish, and the classes are a bit difficult, I would drop maybe one or two and see how it goes. Have you talked to a counselor already?

Lol I think I’m making this more of a big deal than this is. And OP, I know what you are talking about with video games. You just have to learn to limit them. I actually play LOL as well. Just know that games in general won’t help you (as much) as studying will!

Ok, first of all, thank you very much for all of these helpful advices. And, i will go talk to my dean tomorrow, and just stwich that AP calc to pre-calc in next semester cuz i felt so left behind and impossible to catch up. And, keep study hard for rest of my classes.
And, i just uninstalled that game, haha.
Again, thx for both of u guys. And, hope u guys will be successful as well!
