So until now I was planning on attending a Summer Program at NYU. The thing is I only got into my 3rd choice because I applied pretty late. Now I'm contemplating on whether or not it's worth the money($3500+) and time.

If I don't do it, my summer will be much more lax and I can focus on developing my ec's in other ways such as a job, some music courses, maybe an internship, community service, etc. Plus I'll save my parents a LOAD of money that can probably go into something else useful. Also, the fact that i only got into my 3rd choice is kind of disheartening. It's a subject that I don't have too much of an interest in.

That being said, it is a dream of mine to attend NYU and I feel that maybe this program can push me over the edge in the application process. It can possibly show that I have a major interest in attending the school(I'm planning on applying ED). Also if I happen to do well and get a proffessor recommendation, that'd probably do wonders.

So as you can see, I'm in a pretty sticky situation. Any comments/suggestions can help guys. Thanks!

dont go. save the money. it wont help much in the app process and if ur applying ed then they know its ur number 1 choice obviously. like u said develop ur ec's. since its not even a subject ur interested in u should just spend ur summer developing ecs like u said. i think this is a no-brainer im sorry.

I probably wouldn't go. That's a pretty high cost for a third choice program, and there's no point in spending your summer on a subject you aren't interested in. Spend the summer volunteering and consider taking courses at a community college or something else that you could enjoy while also helping your admissions process.

thanks guys..much appreciated.

I'd also like to point out that my original intention was also to learn something about a subject that I was actually interested in. But as you can see, under the circumstances, that probably won't be happening.

I was notified, however, that I can request to be put on a waitlist. What do you suggest I do if I do get taken off the waitlist? I'd still be hesitant to spend all that money and time......bleh it's so confusing!!!!!!!!!

My sister went to NYU for a summer and eventually got a rec from her professor. It definitely helps in getting in.

In your case, it depends on how strong an applicant you are already. Do your EC's need some work? Will your recs be strong without an NYU professor?

No, nothing in my resume is particularily strong.

that's one thing that keeps me thinking...a professor rec could really help.

but could you be sure of getting that rec? I've tried taking programs in the hope of getting a rec, and ended up with out anything. By taking the time and money involved in the program you could do several other things over the summer and end up with stronger ECs and possibly a couple recs.

I think you should just ditch the program. It's not worth the expense to your parents, it usually doesn't help in the admissions process (unless you get a good professor rec, which probably is pretty hard to come by and sort of a variable aspect - what if you didn't get it? your parents just wasted $3500?). Relax, try to find an internship, and maybe start work on your college essays (if you're applying next year).

yeah that's definitely another issue factoring into my decision.

ahhh there are too many "what if's" that can end up as a result of my decision. This isn't good!

I think that's probably what I'm going to end up doing ebonytear.
