I'm currently sophomore class treasurer. I won because I was the only person who ran. I'm not the most popular guy and that seems to have been the criteria for student govt positions in the past. Our president is a flamboyant dumbass who gets C's in honors classes. He also won because he was the only one who ran...in fact, no one has ran against him in 2 years. Working with him was not a pleasurable experience. It's time to choose what we're running for again...

Now, here are some things I don't know.

In your high school, do student govt elections for junior class positions still rely on popularity or are the students finally smart enough to vote for the smart guy?

-Does class treasurer really sound that impressive? Does continuing to run for the same position show that I'm not looking to move forward?

-What do you think I should run for? (Additional details can be provided if I've forgotten anything important.)

I can tell you, I literally would only recognize somewhere between 1/6th and 1/8th of my class. I think most people would have recognized more people than I do, but I highly doubt anyone would have ever said a word to half of their class at my school. It seems impossible for the clich

I’m currently Senior Member. I was actually meant to be President of the Student Council but I came in second (by a couple votes) because the person that actually won took people’s ballot sheet and actually went to them to influence them to vote for him.

Well, treasurer isn’t that bad of a position. If i were you, i would obviously go for something in the realms of Vice or Secretary. Since your not that popular, you might not stand a chance.

And in High School and (sometimes on a national level) government is mostly about popularity.

Do you think Obama would have won if everyone in America was blind? He may, but we can’t doubt that he being African American had a great influence on his votes.

If your not popular, people won’t know you. Even if you do have the best policies in the world. Also, it’s not only smartness that plays a role. Half of the people in the U.S government went to the Ivies. What does that tell you about ‘smart’ people?

I can’t say that he doesn’t deserve it because he gets C’s in honors classes as that doesn’t tell us who will make the better decision. But if you really really want that position, then run for it. Anything can happen, for all you know, people might actually want CHANGE but be sure to know your support. If you have people with you, there is a greater chance they’ll have an influence on their friends.

P.S:Be really sure your as committed as you might think. Because it my just be the ‘prestige’ of the position that’s appealing to you. ( In my case, that was half the reason )

The prestige is all I want. This is nothing more than a nice thing to put on the college apps (and a crapload of worthless meetings to attend).

Well, i said that because in my school, it’s not as easy to run. I certainly would have overloaded myself now that i can see it from a vantage point. I played Varsity soccer and

I’m not sure how many other things you do but I played Varsity Soccer, Track team, Volunteerings, J.O.P, S.T.E.P,…and i haven’t even scratched the surface.

IMO, all this is a bunch of crap reasoning for wanting to be in student government, especially the president. Although most do want to for the college apps initially, they learn to love it and how great it is to be in it.
It’s really a great thing to be in and experience in High School, aside from how prestigious it may look on apps. If you want your school to be spirited and fun, then being the student body president would be the best position to run for. You can really make a difference, as you control everyone else. I’d say run if you’re going to be committed to this, and not run a crap student gov.

Aside from that, I’d say they are mostly based on popularity contests, and how much you advertise yourself. There are the handful that actually vote for people who aren’t useless, but those are the ones who actually care.

Secretaries, vp, and presidents probably are the ones who seem to work ‘harder’ so I guess treasurer doesn’t really sound too impressive compared to these.
Do you guys have individual classes and then a student body? If so, running for anything for Student Body is a step up, so even if you run for student body treasurer, it wont be seen as not moving forward at all!

We have individual class positions, then SGA (Student Govt Association) positions. If I run in anything for SGA, however, I’ll be running against seniors, which is a sure loss, IMO (and unheard of).

Because they’re giving prestige to the wrong person…he couldn’t do anything useful with it. Besides, my motives may be shallow, but I’m still more competent than he is. And I’ll be motivated because I’ll have to run for re-election :)

In my school, we have so many clubs competing with each other to ‘raise the highest for haiti’ or ‘devote the most time to the soup kitchen’. It’s really a great thing when you learn to love it. The ‘International Club’ and the "Student Councils’ have always been sorta rivals in my school. We threw a party to raise money for cancer and the party was sick to say the least. Ended at 1:30. (sadly). the ‘Interntional club’ threw something similar but it flopped, sadly, as it was for good cause.

Our current student council made so much change to our school that we constantly get recognition for it even without seeking it.

Not sure if everyone’s government is the type that exists in my school but if your not satisfied with it join in on the fun and change it.

^At our school, Student government simply has no power. We don’t actually get to talk to the administration, nor do we have any money, nor do we have a teacher adviser (cut due to budget issues lol), and we have to go through an insane amount of paper work to get anything done. We’re lucky if we can organize one event a year. Any significant change is impossible.
