hmm yea.. My friend is president of key club and she has a list of the events ive done and hours and can be confirmed by our adviser.

UCSD does not care about sport. You can play 4-year of a sport and get 0 points. You only get points if you are captain and have some sort of leadership position in the sport. You are giving point under the leadership position.

Don't worry about UCLA too much, unlike the other UC schools, UCLA and Cal use a holistic admission system where 3 different people analyze the 3 categories of your application. They DON'T use the STUPID point-system that the other UC schools use.. but I'm not complaining..

888888- you must appeal. I called the adcom also. My D is short of 250 odd points. She got only 150 for special talent and NONE for leadership-has started 2 clubs????

The adcom was very nice and did a compete breakdown with me

The point system confuses me quite a bit. My friend had like a 3.5 UC GPA, barely had any community service, had no leadership positions (but was in 3/4 clubs) didn't work, had around a 1400 SAT (From the new one), had a pretty bad essay and he somehow got in to UCSD's engineering. I'm baffled.

Sorry but team captain is not the only way to earn points from sports. You also earn points if your team wins league and or section, if you break a record, and if you earn a place on the all metro, all league, or all section team. You can also gain points by earning the designation of scholar athlete at your school.

I have a general question about admissions. When a university says they use the holistic system (i.e Cal, LA), does that mean they disregard the point systems? I heard holistic gives those who aren't as strong statwise a "fighting chance." haha...

yeah, I think by holistic it means that they look for the 'well-rounded' student... it definitely gives those who aren't strong stats-wise a 'fighting chance'! I think a lot of private schools are like that as well.

seniormom99,

Did your adcom say it was a valid appealing basis point?

what's all this point talk?

Cut-Off Point.
Above = Acceptance
Below = Rejection

WOW............ I AM IN THE SAME SITUATION!!

i got 74xx and they said i need 75xx, just 100 points away from my dream school, but apparently i made a tiny mistake submitting my grades. Hopefully when i appeal, and it is new and compelling info, that they will re-evaluate my application and hopefully admit me to UCSD! BTW, i got maximum points in EC's, i had over 1200 hrs in community service and much more, apparently my GPA was low because i messed up submitting my grades. =[

you couldn't do this if the admissions were holistic like in UCLA or Cal.

When submitting community service documents are we suppose to submit 12th school year hours too even though the school year has not ended yet. Im thinking of including only my 9th, 10th, and 11th school year hours and stating that since the 12th school year is not yet over, the logs have not been included.

I contacted an admissions officer and asked about community service signatures. Apparently admissions think that signatures could be from anyone and so community service logs must be turned in. Are signatures on community service logs required then? Would having them help?

Some of my community service hours were not calculated since I listed some as also an extracurricular activity. I am currently writing my appeal.

that's strange, I got in SD but I've never heard of anything about a point system.

I only have 50 community service hours. I have decent GPA 4.04, but my SAT is pretty mediocre 1820.

do we have to submit volunteer hours? i mean, do we have to submit that actual documents, or only when they request it?

gosh i never knew sd had a point system!

No. it has to be explained specifically what "Volunteering work" you've done. Can't be vague like mine..

Well.. got into Berkeley.. and rejected from UCSD and UCLA? how wack is that!

that is weird!!!!
i got rejected from la too, but i got to sd..
but seriously, if you got into berkeley, then hello, i wonder why you didnt get into sd.

do berkeley and la have this number system, and if you call them, can you get that information!?!?!?!?!?!?

No Berkeley and LA do not use it. The two universities use the holistic system.

Davis and UCSD do use it though.
