What to Bring

I've been warned by the dorm inspectors last year for having a coffee maker in my room, but not for having an all-purpose water boiler (which can also easily make coffee) ten feet away.

i dont see why they would allow water boilers and not coffee makers. the water boiler i have (its like a small pitcher) doesnt turn off unless you unplug it. coffee makers usually turn themselves off after a while.

cant you just leave the microwave under the bed and just use a towel or something to cover it? of course its in an awkward position to use, but i would do that rather than dragging it out all the time.

and i dont know about summit/terrace, but vista didnt have a single common microwave in the building.

does dykstra have a common microwave????????????

Does Sunset Village have a common microwave???????

Well they said that "hot water dispensers" aren't allowed, whatever those are.

Isn't it bad to operate a microwave under the bed where ventilation is very poor (especially if it's crammed full of other junk)?

Microwaves actually aren't that common. They had a microfridge in every lounge in Canyon Point for only the first couple weeks of school last year. For some reason, they were all taken away... leaving the closest microwave (that I know of) at Sproul's lobby.

But in the end, a microwave is probably the least useful thing unless one is a picky eater or has an insufficient mean plan and plan on stocking up. For the occasional use, common microaves aren't too bad. Water boiler >>> microwave.

yes, using a microwave under the bed is not a good idea. we took ours out and placed it on top of our fridge when we used it. however, my roomie's bed was also raised to the highest height that a dorm bed can be raised so there would have been enough ventilation. but like i said before, having a free standing microwave in your room really isn't worth it...

and i agree that a water boiler is a lot better than a microwave

Water boilers are better indeed... Safer, cheaper and easier to carry.

Wait, are water boilers the same thing as hot water dispensers? 'Cause I thought hot water dispensers aren't allowed, and i have one that I'm not sure I should bring... Lol.

what are the consequences of getting caught?

They scold you and make you bathe in that scalding, boiled water in front of the RD.

i had a water boiler out in my room during room inspection and my ra looked at it for a minute so she did know it was there but never said anything. she leaves her door open and ive seen one in her room herself

wow this thread is old...

all they do is write you a note explaining the problem and giving you a date to have it fixed by. if you don't do it by that date, i don't know what they do then. my roomie last year had a halogen lamp which she removed when they told her to, so... yah.

i have a microwave under my bed. during inspection, would they lift up my bed covers hanging over my bed?

no.
10char

they can't touch anything. so just cover up what you don't want them to see.

i heard some RAs would screw you over my "accidentally" move your cover for the item and then just say "oops too bad" but most RAs aren't that mean... like my roommate put a towel on his halogen lamp and it is clear he is using the little hand towel to cover over the lamp and the RA didn't say anything about it...

depends on the RA and the front desk staffer that will be inspecting your room.

usually your RA is pretty chill about that stuff, unless they're one of the mean and strict ones or they dont like you. the front desk staffer may not be though. they can still get you if something is obviously a covered microwave or other illegal device. they dont have to actually see it or lift off the cover, they can put "suspicious microwave".

I have my microwave on top of my fridge. It's covered by a towel, and I haven't had a removal notice. It's so late in the school year I doubt anyone will care.

soo this thread was informative.

But I still have a question.

My two roommates, who know each other, insist on bringing a mini-fridge and a microwave (separately). I suggested just renting a micro/fridge unit, but they basically dismissed that since they already have them separately. I don't really want to make waves, since it's such a minor thing.

So I guess my question is, are free-standing mini-fridges allowed (I gathered microwaves weren't, but it was mentioned several times on here that you could just bring your own fridge if you had one....albeit this thread is a few years old, so just confirming that that is still legal)??

Secondly, should we just cover the microwave then, or hide it or whatever? Will we always know when they're "inspecting," or do they do it when we aren't there sometimes?

Lastly, if you get caught with a microwave/hotplate /illegal amenity in your room, what happens..?

thanks :)
