What to do about conflicting deposit deadlines and notification dates (transfer admissions)

Hi,

I’m having a problem regarding my transfer admissions. I’ve applied to two schools, and I’ve already been accepted to one. The problem is, they need a deposit for financial aid by May 1, while the second school that I’ve applied to (actually my first choice), doesn’t notify me of my admissions status until June 1.

What should I do??? I know depositing for one school and not going there is not only unethical but I also can’t afford it. Would it be crazy to ask the school that I have been accepted to to delay the deadline??? Or ask the second school for earlier notification, which feels incredibly unlikely…

For reference the schools are Bard and Georgetown. Please help!

Thank you!

I would send in the deposit in for the place that needs the money by May 1 and abandon any love for the June 1st place.

Not only would it be crazy, what incentive do these schools have to permit any policy deviation? Remember, if they do it for you, there are obligated to do it for everyone else. Appropriately, institutional policies are formulated to benefit the school (duh). What do they gain by cooperating with you?

The prohibition is against accepting 2 places at the same time. That’s not the situation here. You have exactly 1 acceptance. If you later get in the 2nd place and prefer that then you send in a 2nd deposit and lose the 1st one, notifying them you won’t be attending after all. Happens all the time with people on waitlists. Colleges call this “summer melt.” If you can’t afford to do this, as you say, looks like the college you’re going to is the one that has accepted you.

ok… looks like im in a pickle no matter which way you look at it
