So I have orientation in a few days and I was just wondering what all I need to have completed before then. I think I need to do the math placement test. I've heard something about the foreign language test, but I don't think I need to take that.

Do you have to complete the health form before orientation or just before July 1st?

Should I bring my new laptop to orientation?

mpratt, there’s a laptop workshop for new students where they help you download Clemson software and teach you everything you need to know for using a laptop at Clemson so if you want to, you can bring your laptop and sign up for a workshop here: http://workgroups.clemson.edu/DCIT2804_LAPTOPREG/index.php
it’s optional and it goes from 2-4 PM on the 2nd day of orientation

A few more things you need to do if you already haven’t
-Take the math placement test already
-If you want to take or if your major requires french, spanish, or german, you need to take a foreign language. Check in the Undergraduate Announcements book they sent you to check if your major requires a Foreign Language. You don’t have to take a placement test for language if you want to take Chinese or Japanese.
-You can complete the health form anytime before July 1st
-Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid if you haven’t because that’s how the check that you aren’t an illegal immigrant.
-Make sure your high school sends your transcript to Clemson
-Familiarize yourself with TigerWeb, the online class registration system, since that’s what you will be using at orientation to sign up for classes. You can’t access the system yet but there’s a demo you can use here: WebRegistration

are you going to orientation on the 15th-16th? If so, I’ll cya there!

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if it’s possible to go to any laptop session? I live less than an hour away so I can go up there whenever. Think they’d let me go even if it wasn’t during my orientation?

How hard is the math placement test?

I’m actually going the 22nd-23rd. Hope it goes well.

n/m. answered my own question

I can’t believe that it has already been two years since my orientation. There isn’t much you need to do other than what pierre said. Be ready for a few busy days and to meet a lot of people. This is your first chance to meet your classmates, so be sure to be outgoing and have fun. Remember that Clemson is pretty dead right now, but it picks up considerably when the school year starts. There aren’t many people at summer school this year, and most of us are live off campus.

The math placement test isn’t too hard. I only had pre-calc and AP Stats, and I managed to get the highest score.

Yeah, you can go to the laptop session whenever you want even if it isn’t your orientation session.
The math placement test is really easy (in my opinion), the hardest stuff is basic pre-calculus.

Alright. I gotta see if I have to work that last day of orientation.

Since I already have math credit transferring it, does it really matter how I do on the test?

if you have math credit from another college or AP exams, it doesn’t matter how you do on the test (though if you do have math credit, im guessing you’d probably ace the test haha)

Pierre, let us know how orientation goes. We are going on June 22-23. Your tips will be appreciated as always :)

^ Definitely.

Someone want to help me figure out how to access my Clemson email? :)

I’m basically done with orientation, just need to register for classes in 2 hours but when I take the 22 hour train ride back home and have some more time to write a longer message, I’ll let you know about orientation!

Mpratt15 and everybody else who may want to know this:

Step by step instructions on how to set up your email account: [Clemson University : CCIT : Setting Up a Clemson Google Apps for Education Account](<a href=“CCIT Web Site”>CCIT Web Site)

you access your email account by going to :

g.clemson.edu

Thanks man. Pretty confusing process for setting up a simple email account.

How did orientation go?

Your supposed to check into the dorms before checking into orientation? Is it pretty safe to bring a laptop or should I just bring it the second day?

Well before check-in for orientation, feel free to leave all your stuff in your room in Lever Hall where you stay during orientation. My roommate brought his Macbook Pro to orientation and left it in his room when he was at the orientation events. It just depends on how comfortable you are with bringing a laptop, just remember to lock your door when you aren’t there and hope that your roommate does the same.

Orientation was really fun, everybody’s really friendly and cool, some of the talks and lectures were a little boring. You get a lot of that top 20 talk and there’s apparently a class you have to sign up for during orientation called LIB 100 which is a pass/fail class made up of your summer reading assignment.

A couple of stuff you might need to know:
- You get your student ID taken during check-in time so if you get that done then, you can pick up your Tiger 1 Card the next morning!
- You get broken off into 20 groups for lunch where you do some ice breaker game stuff.
- You meet with your academic advisor as a group in the afternoon of your 1st day where they will help you plan out a first semester schedule.
- There’s a social thing at night with free bowling and pool.
- They’ll be some free time before and after dinner and lots on the 2nd day as you wait to register for classes.
- The interest sessions on the 2nd day were really boring. There was nothing that a normal person could hear there that they wouldn’t know already.
- At check-in, there is a vendor/services fair where local businesses and campus resources set up tables so bring your questions if you have any!
- On the 2nd day, each school/college at Clemson is assigned a registration time slot. (Let me know when you are going to orientation and what college you’re in and I can let you know when you’re registering). I had the misfortune of going to a session where engineering/science registered last at 1:15. The registration schedule is different every orientation session so sometimes engineering/science may register first!
On registering, they only open up a few slots in each class so you may find yourself shut out of your elective/general education classes that you want if you register 3rd-last so make sure that you bring a 2nd/3rd choice backup in case you don’t get your gen ed class that you want. I was lucky to get my chinese elective but I was originally shut out of Math 106 but they squeezed me into a session since i have to take math as an engineer.
- After registering, you’re free to do whatever, there are sample dorms available for viewing in Johnstone, Manning and Young. I actually thought the dorms in Johnstone were much nicer than what people have said them to be. There’s more room in Johnstone than a high rise building like Manning, the sink is a nice feature, and there’s a lot more storage space. I think I might try to switch Johnstone to my first choice dorm. Manning’s smaller unless you’re lucky to get a corner room and there’s no sink there either. The shoeboxes were very nice too.
- You can also go on a tour of the career center, health center or a general campus tour as well. And as I stated above, the laptop workshop is in the afternoon of the 2nd day.

If you want to know anything else about orientation, just let me know! Just be yourself, be open, and have fun.

Thanks for the info. Lot’s of good stuff in there.

I’ve talked to some of my friends that have already been to orientation and they say the same thing about some of the topics being boring.

Is it a 1 on 1 session with your academic advisor?

By local vendors you mean banks, restaurants, shops, etc?

So after you register for classes you are done unless you signed up for the laptop session?

I’m going June 22-23 and am in the College of Agriculture, Forestry & Life Sciences.

I dunno about the other majors but for engineering, they split us up into groups of 50 and had us meet as a group with the advisors (since there are only 3 advisors and 100 engineering students at my orientation session). So no it’s not 1 on 1 advising but you really don’t need that yet. There’s time at the end when the advisor walks around, checks/signs off on your classes and can answer your questions though.

Yeah local vendors = local banks, stores and shops.

You are done with everything after you register for classes unless you wanna check on the housing showcases, take a campus, career center or health center tour or if you signed up for the laptop workshop.

Sorry to say this, but Agriculture registers for classes 2nd to last on the 23rd (after Business/Behavioral Science, Engineering/Science, Health/Human Education) so if you need to pick an elective, be prepared and come with some backup choices if you don’t get your 1st choice.

Yeah, that does kinda stink, nothing I can do about it though.

I think I might take another tour of the dorms so I can get an idea of how I’m going to build my loft. Got some big ideas. Lol.

that’s a good idea, which dorms did you sign up for?

I asked for 1. Johnstone Annex, 2. Shoeboxes, 3. Byrnes
might change that though

did you two go (or are going) to the freshman orientation?

I’m going to the transfer one in July. On the schedule is it says individual advising. I’m assuming transfer orientation gets far less people. My only concern is that the classes required for my major are going to be filled by then

yeah I went to the freshmen orientation this week, you may not get all the electives that you would like to take but you should definitely get the required classes you need to graduate.

I know I put Byrnes first. I think I put Johnstone 3rd. After hearing about the sinks in the room I kinda want to change that.
