What to do if not accepted into CSULB nursing program

Hi I’m currently a student in high school and I want to go into nursing at CSULB, but I know that the program is very hard to get into and competitive. What other schools are easy to transfer into after if I don’t get into the nursing program, but have completed all the pre-reqs? Also is there anything else I could do to help me get into the nursing program after being declined from my first application?

What are your stats?

I would aim for a direct admit Nursing program vs a 2+2 like CSULB if you have the stats.

If not, then you would need to apply widely as transfer if you cannot get into CSULB’s program after completing your pre-req’s. All Nursing programs at the Cal states are impacted so none would be easy. You might want to consider Azusa Pacific or University of San Francisco as possible targets as a transfer. Arizona state, University of Portland might be OOS options. It will really depend upon your GPA and TEAS score for your target schools. There are also post-bacc programs after you complete your Bachelor’s degree

Hi, thank you for responding, my hs gpa right now is a 4.2 and my SAT score is a 1420. Are there any “easy” to get into direct admit nursing programs in California that have good NCLEX passing rates?

Also, is UCI’s nursing program something that I could possibly get into?

There are no “easy” direct admit programs in California and the majority have around a 5% acceptance rate or less.

Here is a list of the direct admit Nursing programs in California:
Azusa Pacific University
University of San Francisco
Dominican University
San Diego State
Cal State Fullerton
UCI
UCLA

Cal state San Marcos program is direct admit for local applicants (in the local service area).

The rest of the Cal states have 2+2 programs which are all highly impacted. For the UC’s and CSU’s, they use 10-11th grades only and calculate the UC/CSU capped weighted GPA;

Some nursing stats from SDSU: https://nursing.sdsu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/FTFAdmissionProfile_2016-2020.pdf

Nursing stats for UCI:
Fall 2019 freshman applicants: 3045
Fall 2019 freshman admissions: 52 (1.7% admitted)
Average UC GPA: 4.17 GPA
Average total SAT score: 1920
Average total SAT score (new version): 1357

Your stats make you a competitive applicant, so I would apply to all direct admit programs in California and include several of the 2+2 programs like CSULB, SJSU, Sonoma, Channel Islands etc… as backup’s.

Some notes regarding CA direct admit Nursing programs:
UCLA and SDSU will not allow you to do an Internal transfer into their Nursing programs if not admitted directly as a Freshman.

UCI admits into the University first and then into the major so you can select Nursing as your 1st choice and another major as an alternate. If you are not admitted directly into Nursing, they will consider you for your alternate and then you can meet the Nursing school requirements and try for an internal transfer/major change.

CSU Fullerton offers direct admit to Freshman applicants and will take a small number of internal transfers at Junior level if you are not admitted into the Nursing program as a Freshman.

This list is really sad for all CA students. Our D applied to all of these with 4.3 GPA and got rejected by all. It is also super interesting that at the same time she was accepted to 5 direct nursing programs in Boston. She has a great choices but it is a hard to swallow.
