What to do if TRANSFER- doesn't get into college?

I just received three rejections today-- I haven't heard back form my UC's but in reality I do not want to go to a UC.

What are my options-especially if I have taken almost all the courses I need for my major, all the science & math courses?

What if I do not get anywhere period? what does one do?

besides getting a job.. this is scary but this may become my reality..?

any help or advice will be great thanks

Why don’t you want to go to a UC? Where were you rejected from? Where are you currently? Is it so horrible that you’d rather drop out than stay?

I cannot see myself at a UC- The UC I applied to (SB) is not even somewhere I would even want to go… class sizes to big etc… I am currently at a California Community College

but even so if i do not get into any schoosl (including SB) what are my options/ i don’t think i can handle doing applications again let alone pay for them.

One thing at a time here. But first, the obvious (though it won’t do much good at this point)…always have at least 1-2 safety schools that you would be fine/happy to attend in the event that you don’t get into your first choices…anyway.

I’m not sure of your academic, financial, personal, etc. circumstances, but based on all the info you gave us, here are some options for ya.

You can look for some appealing schools on the Common App site that haven’t closed for applications yet. (remember…look for safeties, not unreachable reaches or even “maybes”)

You can take a gap year and do something really impressive that will make you stand out next year if you want to reapply for transfer. You can take classes part-time during the gap year just to keep your momentum, or work and do research/something related to your field of interest on the side. It’s up to you, and there are zillions of possibilities to choose from with this one.

Stay where you are, if you’re at a 4-year school and don’t HAVE to transfer (like if you were at a community college).

Go to a UC and just deal with it. Remember, as a transfer you won’t be spending the full 4 years of your undergrad work there.

Are you graduating from a CCC? If not, you could stay and finish a degree program and reapply after another semester or year. Or, if you can afford a gap year, maybe do something relevant to your area of study?

It just seems like I have competitive stas but I am not getting into the schools I want to get into. - Reed, Colgate, Pepperdine, Colby, Boston College,

and I had three safety schools- UCSB ( havent heard back), Pepperdine (waitlited) and Reed (denied)

I worked to hard to just settle for a state school, I need that small environment with resources that could help me with my endeavors if I wanted to go to UC i could’ve went straight out of high school I went to a 2 year so that I could get into those private schools I wasn’t able to get into in high school

Dang, you got your decision from BC already? I thought they weren’t releasing until the end of May. Ugh, that means my decision is probably on its way as well now…

(/offtopic) Anyway, sorry to hear about your rejections. I just got my first one today, so I feel ya! These things are totally arbitrary, really - like, I know that I had competitive stats for Cornell CAS, but it just didn’t work out. It’s okay, though, because you WILL end up where you’re supposed to end up. Like I said, if it means taking a gap year and packing your C.V. with things that the ad-coms CANNOT ignore (assuming you’re willing to take a year off from school at this point), then that’s a good alternative to consider. It would most likely help enormously in getting you into the private schools you want to attend (and I completely understand the issue of public vs. private - I couldn’t even consider public uni’s after my experience at a state CC for the last two years). :)

Unless your “safety” schools have formal articulation agreements with your CCC that guarantee admission, then they aren’t really safeties. At best, they are “matches”.

You need to reassess your options. CCC transfers have priority for the UCs, surely there is at least one that will admit you! If you don’t get in for the fall term, reapply for the winter.

I also suggest you write Pepperdine a letter of intent expressing that you REALLY want to go and why, as well as a dedication to attend if accepted off the waitlist.

no offense but even if you have a 4.0 from community college it isnt that impressive to schools like reed…you should settle for whatever school you get…

@mcfuggie - well obviously I don’t plan on my gpa getting me by i have great skills and resume outside of school
and I don’t plan on settling- that’s just not me

ellomeno -

You need to start drawing up a Plan B. If you don’t get into any college or university that doesn’t feel like “settling” to you, then you need to know what you will do for the next year while you are re-working your list and applying for admission again. What kind of job can you get? Do you need to be fully self-supporting, or can your parents feed and house you during this “gap year”? Would something like Americorps work for you? Pay a call on the counselor office at your CCC, and get some help with this.
