I’m from the heart of Chicago, and I’m kind of scared to commit to IU because Bloomington feels really smally to me. What do people do (other than party and go to games) on the weekends? Do people often go to Indy or Louisville? Is there ever a time when you get bored with Bloomington or felt like you’ve seen and done it all?
I was thinking this before I visited, because Bloomington is kind of in the middle of nowhere. I only visited for a weekend but now IU is one of my top choices, there is a lot to do on campus or in the town. Lots of restaurants and bars, and it seems like there are a lot of fun events either on campus or in Bloomington. It’s a great college town. Lots of kids there are from Chicago so I think you’ll be fine.
I am always amazed when prospective students are concerned about things to do in a college town that is home to a university of 40,000. If this school feels small to you, you’re in trouble. At the risk of being insulting, are you coming to IU and Bloomington for a vacation or an education?
B-Town has plenty to do but I guarantee that you will not have the time to worry about it if you are even a little serious about your studies. I know students attending schools in Chicago, NYC, and other big cities who would say the same. At least in Bloomington you don’t have to worry about leaving campus and finding yourself in a nasty neighborhood (think UIC, NYU, etc.) If you embrace the IU community and the town of Bloomington while here you will never be bored.
BTW, I come from Chicagoland and find the lack of big city BS refreshing.
