If I don't want to spend my summer at an internship getting coffee and making copies and instead want to either:

a) Volunteer abroad - Think along the lines of One Laptop Per Child (I can't do their volunteering abroad program due to language requirements) or Grameen Bank. Unfortunately, parental concern for my safety largely rules out programs based in Africa and South America.

b) Do research/take classes - Classes at the London School of Econ is my current backup plan.

or c) Participate in an awesome camp/program, etc - A friend of a friend worked at NASA over the summer. Way awesome.

What are some of your personal recommendations/past summer experiences? I'm a freshman Econ major interested in anything remotely having to do with development/abroad/Econ and would prefer to have at least a month of summer to myself to work on a side project. I've spent quite a bit of time over the past few weeks perusing online resources and sites, but I feel like getting feedback and personal experiences from others would be most useful at this point.

Thanks in advance!
