Blue and Gold is only good for 2 academic years for us transfers. After that we're pretty much on our own. Many majors will take more than 2 years to complete whether due to unit requirements or lack of available classes.

get a job or two right now and start saving upppp. since it’s my last semester at CC right now i’m going to do that, since i’ll have nothing to do alll summer.

Loans - 30K in one year probably isn’t possible

Magical thinking (no offense)

Jobs - 30K or close to that is required. Pretty hard to do for a college student. Only working part-time in the school year and in the summers. Especially if your major is something like engineering or biology.

that sucks, i thought blue and gold would cover us until we graduated (within reason). duh, well, i was stuck for an extra year in my CCC because of the lack of spring admissions and earned enough units to graduate within two years at a UC. but many kids will get stuck for an extra semester. i am also planning on taking summer classes every semester including this upcoming semester.

of course i am already worried about the GRE and paying for an MA! egads. school is expensive.

@DivZero
“Magical Thinking” Is that a state grant? hahahahahah okay, i want to apply for that one.

@ divzero
students should still be elligible for PELL grants, so you don’t need to raise the entire 30k. and if you are doing well, the school might have some money for you as well. so, maybe you need 20k. that could be covered by loans and a part time job. also, one would think that the workload would be light during the final semester. but i guess some majors are seriously tough.

“Loans - 30K in one year probably isn’t possible”
thats where your wrong. i know a friend of mine who doesn’t get financial aid and he has to pay for his own schooling he took out a mad amount of loans

^ if you pay full price for books and supplies, sure. but most of us save money and get used books or share with friends when possible and save a lot in that area. fortunately they allow us to budget the real cost, and then if we save money we can borrow less or use that money for something else—like a haircut. haha

@philosoup…that generally an estimate for the school but sometimes you will spend that much a yeah, sometimes you will spend less…that of course is also probably an estimate for a NEW book…but I save nearly 800 dollars a year, buying my books NEW on Amazon, it is way cheaper than the student bookstore,

@northbeach, for PELL grant, the student must have significant eligibility, the parents must not make a certain amount of money, have a low EFC, i believe 3850, depends on the # of people in household, but generally if you have a pell grant of 3850 or so, then you will most likely get a PELL…

@divzero, the reason why the UC requires that the student have all of those perquisites is to generally be able to graduate on time, at the junior level you shouldn’t have much lower division classes to take if any, but also being upper division, as a Junior you would get a higher priority of registration, and for most school, when they allow transfers to register, they add more seats to the class for the transfers. As far as not being able to take classes due to them being full, im pretty sure there are many alternatives for classes that would count for you major. And the reason why it would take majors to take more than 2 years, is probably due to a major change or lack of prerequisites. Or maybe they wanted to take their semesters slow. One good advice, would be to take summer school, because that would put you ahead about 1/2 a quarter.

Summer School, take max units and work hard!

@tomatoman, if one was to need an extra year of school, the unsub and sub loans will be no where near enough to cover the tuition and fees for another year…The max amount of loans for a Junior, Senior, or any year after senior year is only 12,500…but total amount of sub and unsub loans that you allowed for your entire academic career is about 50K…so if you already took out loans for your previous freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior year, then you would be pretty close to the total loan limit…im sorry the max amount of 12,500 is for an independent student,

if your parents support you, then your max amount of loans is generally about $7500…but your parents cant get plus loans…

to qualify for more unsub, sub as a independent student, you parent plus loans must get denied.

when i spoke to the UCB department coordinator for my major she said this is one of the main reasons that UC schools want us to complete our lower division major requirements before we enter the school, including prereqs. she also suggested summer school and one heavy semester to complete within two years.

this way we can just wait until graduate school to really plummet into the depths of debt. haha

as i recall, blue and gold started in 2009! just think what it was like prior to that. ugh. i hope they don’t cancel it anytime soon. calgrant suffers attacks every year.

you can appeal to continue to be eligible for financial aid once you’ve hit the # of credits cap. you should get approved if you’re making good progress and are close to graduating.

you can appeal every semester/year anyway for additional financial aid. i am not sure where it would come from, but you have the ability to say you aren’t getting enough money to survive.

let me just say that these amounts (on my ucsb award letter) are RIDICULOUS. this is for AN ENTIRE YEAR:
Room & Board (Off-Campus)$9600
Personal Expenses$1527
Transportation$1226
Telephone$284

they want that room & board amount to cover rent and food for 12 months. or are they expecting you to work summers? do they adjust your financial aid if you attend summer sessions?
i am going to spend more than $1500 on toiletries/clothes/eating out/going to concerts or movies in one year.
that transportation amount kind of sucks if you plan to actually drive your car and have a car payment instead of just only paying $100 a month for insurance.
… and my cellphone bill is $90 a month.

well basically the financial aid that is offered, is ONLY for the academic school year Fall-Spring…so this is not the full 12 months, its only about 9 months…as for a car payment, well this is not the schools problem…transportation is for like a train/bus ride to go home, its not neccesarily to pay for gas, a cell phone bill would be under your personal expenses, but they dont care if you have a cell phone bill…its not a necessity, just like having a laptop is not a necessity. So if you tell the school you need money to pay for a car or phone bill…they would secretly laugh in your face…$9600 is well enough for a student to live off campus for 9 months…that is if they are not being picky and whiny about where they live, and who they live with…

the only case a school will offer you more money, is if you have not taken out the maximum student loans for that year, which is when they will offer you any extra student loans that you have not taken out to help you pay for what ever you need.

i have a question about blue and gold plan, i recently received less than 1k from ucr for grant, does that mean that i will get blue and gold, and did they already distribtute the blue and gold yet?

Did you receive an offer for a Cal Grant? If so I think you won’t get Blue and Gold as your systemwide fees will probably be covered by the cal grant. The Blue and Gold plan is just a promise that are your system wide fees will be paid for either with a Cal Grant or with UCR grant money.

There’s been some very useful posts. Let’s keep this discussion going.

@samurai I am an engineering major, so 3 years once transferred is the norm. Most community colleges just dont offer many sophomore classes that are offered at a UC. For instance, I can’t take materials, thermodynamics, or dynamics at my cc even though they are part of the sophomore curriculum at UC’s. Even with most of my GE’s completed I have a huge number of major-related classes to take once I transfer.
