What to do...

My son was fortunate to be accepted to all of the schools he applied to. He has narrowed down his list to these:

He does not know what he wants to major in...perhaps psych, but very likely to change.

NYU---liberal studies program---his TOP choice and the school where I can really see him fitting in. He was only given $10,000 scholarship, $3,000 work study and the rest in loans (both him and us). We can afford to pay MAYBE 25-30,000 per year and the rest he would have to take in loans of 20-25,000 per year.

Fordham---Rose Hill--$8,000. scholarship, $9,500 grant, student loans---leaving about $32,000 for us to pay (after the loans for my son)

Univ. of Delaware---- $12,000 scholarship and student loans----leaves about $17,000 for us to pay

My older son went to UDEL and LOVED it, but this son is totally different.

Any thoughts?

If you are willing to pay 30000 per year for NYU, and they give your son 10000 that is 40000 towards a great education. He would be entitled to up to 5500sub/unsub stafford loan, also NYU was giving out Perkins Loans for 2400. I don’t know if they still do, but if they did that is another 7900 towards cost. The total would be 47900. can your son work summers and to earn the next 3000 or so to help close the gap?
I know as a parent, we want our kids to go where they seem to fit, but you have to weigh that with what you are willing to pay and sacrifice. We made the decision to send D to NYU and we are paying 30000 per year, and the rest is scholarship, stafford loans, Perkins, works a WS job and we supplement all year long for books, supplies, food, etc.
She was accepted to U of Del, Boston University, Johns Hopkins and they offered a lot more money, but she wanted NYU. So she is still there and loving every minute of it. Finishing up her Junior year.

milkandsugar,
How much was the scholarship NYU gave your daughter? Is she “just” taking the federal loans, or outside loans, as well?

Just not sure what to do…my son really wants NYU and I truly believe it is the best place for him, but the loan amounts are so daunting. We have two older kids who attended state schools (in and out of state) and we never had to face this. It’s hard to know what is the right thing to do

Nedel,
I posted on your other thread, before I saw this one. D is taking only the fed loans. We cut some of the costs, by doing LCT in Rubin freshman year. That was a huge savings.
My D was also given 10,000 but she appealed over the phone and they gave her 2000 more immediately over the phone, it’s definitely worth a try. If you are going to do this, it absolutely needs to be done before you accept the admission.
If you look at your billable costs it is lower than the actual posted COA.
She also gets her books online used and much cheaper than the book store. We waived Health insurance, and in her sophomore year we eliminated the meal plan because they all have kitchens and her dorm was above a trader joes. These were all things we did to keep costs down. I know it is a hard decision.
