So a new girl from China came my grade. She knows very minimal English (enough to get through class), but she doesn't talk with very many other people. Since I know Mandarin, we've sort of become friends, but it's kind of awkward. Sometimes I try to strike up a conversation, but I have no idea what to talk about. I try to ask about her life or her interests, but it starts to sound like I'm trying to interrogate her. (We don't have any classes together) I don't even know how to say 'what's up'. Plus, my Mandarin isn't very good and I don't really know what Chinese culture among teens is like. So, what should I do? Anyone else ever been in this situation?

Ask her how she is adjusting to life in America, how her classes are going. Ask her what kind of music and stuff she likes. Maybe that way you can “immerse” yourself in her culture and see the stuff she likes, to try and spark up some conversation.

Maybe she needs help in homework? That’s another way you can spend time with her, although that is boring. Also, can you help her with English? You might find it boring, but it will be beneficial for her.
