I am a freshman at UF, and I am currently enrolled in CHM 2045 with Dr. Young. I attend all of her lectures, do the homework, study the book, make flashcards, practice problems etc.. When I enrolled in her class I heard discouraging things about her, but no other CHM 2045 classes were open. Despite any effort on my part, I continually recieve bad grades on her quizzes. However I am not alone. Other students and I have noticed that material that is given to us on quizzes is not material discussed in lecture or in our book. All of us figured that we merely over looked it, however this past week our TA mentioned that he could not find the information anywhere either, and that he only knew it from his previous college. So since this has consistency happened a lot of people in the class are fed up, and feel that something should be done. I agree with them, but I am unsure of how to approach the problem. Other classmates want the test curved or invalidated, and I feel that it is unlikely the professor would agree. I know I should approach the Dr. Young about her quizzes, but how? Should I ask her about some other chemistry question and subtly comment on not being able to find the topics from the quiz anywhere, or should I take a more direct approach? Should I just go up to her and say that I felt the questions were unfair?

I would greater appreciate some input on this issue. Thank you for any ideas.

Review what you got wrong on the quizzes. If you find a question unfair or don’t understand it, ask your professor (nicely) to explain it to you. When she explains it using a concept not in the book or her lecture notes, call her on it (nicely). Ask, “When did we discuss this in class?” or say, “I couldn’t find that information in the book.” Shift the conversation to her ineptitude (smoothly). Hopefully she’ll get the hint.

Did you really enroll in Dr. Young’s class or are you just joking around? I just looked at the ratemy prof site and there are like 100 posts by students describing her class as impossible. It’s too late to bail out of the class now, about all you can do now is keep working hard like you said you are and survive the class–chalk it up as experience. It doesn’t seem like she is going to change for you no matter how you approach her; your best bet for the class is maybe getting tight with the TA you have already interacted with and hang on to him for tips and suggestions to get through the class as best as possible. Maybe the chemistry dept. only keeps her on staff so they look good in comparison to her?

Unfortunately I was stuck with her. When I first signed up for the class it did not tell me
who the professor was, and by the time I found out it was too late to change. Thanks for everyone’s suggestions.
