Okay, so I know ideas about what you want to do can (and often do) change, but I'm just looking for a general idea right now. You know, to maybe help in my college search or something.

I'm currently a junior. I LOOOVE international (but not so much American/South American/African) history, especially wars, conflict, and old history. The deader the better, as my one of my teachers says. I also really enjoy creative writing. Film editing is really fun too, and I'm pretty good at it, if I do say so myself.

Right now I'm leaning toward a double major in history/creative writing, but international relations comes in a very close second. I don't want to end up being a teacher though (no offense to teachers, they deserve some serious respect). My dream job would be working on a war tribunal. Or making historical documentaries (it sounds like soooooo much fun). Or just writing stories. Or maybe being a travel blogger/tv show person.

So I guess what I'm asking is: are there any other majors, programs, or jobs that I haven't considered that might fit with what I enjoy? Thank you :)

Majors: Classics and perhaps anthropology.

Journalism

Documentary Film Making

Area Studies (e.g., Russian & E. European Studies; Asian Studies; Middle Eastern Studies)

Archaeology

Most people on war tribunals are attorneys/judges often with a military background.

I am currently taking an undergrad class in which there is a girl who is majoring in documentary studies. This seems like a pretty cool major and may offer courses in exactly what you describe. I can’t comment on how well it might prepare you for graduate programs in the social sciences.

Thanks for all the replies :)

@katliamom, I’m actually considering doing ROTC, so I’m guessing that’ll help :)

It depends on which college you go to, and what their choices offer, but here at UA we have a “build your own major” program, where you can basically major in whatever you want. For example, I have a friend that wants to form her own non-profit organization for African countries one day, so she’s majoring in that basically. So, you could have the option of majoring in journalism specifically geared toward historical conflict, or whatever it is you want to do. Just an option to keep open The college system is sometimes not as rigid as you think.

I’m currently studying for a LLB (law degree), and a professor of mine actually put me in contact with a friend of his who was just transferred to work in a war tribunal. First, it’s not that hard to find a job there (with the right contacts, etc. but most likely you’ll get a job as an assistant of some sort), but if you want to actually be involved in the process (as a trial attorney or judge, etc) you will need a very strong background. The person I’m talking about is actually a lawyer, he worked for about 10 years in the ICRC (red cross) in several different countries, wrote books, volunteered through his job, so on. He’s got a master’s degree in criminal law and then an advanced degree in international humanitarian law.

I hope this helps a little. But I find this path a little different from the others you like so I would suggest looking well into each of your options.

Good luck!:)
