Hey friends!
I’m a rising senior from NJ, and I love literature. In junior year, I took the highest level lit class (which corresponds with the AP Language & Composition test), and individually I also sat for the AP Literature test (only person in my entire grade to do so). I received a 5 on both tests. Usually, students take the AP Lit course after junior year AP Lang, but I feel like I want to be more challenged since the class is so closely catered towards the AP test. My school requires us to take 4 years of English–what options do I have to take higher courses in lit and simultaneously present to myself to colleges as a very strong lit student (my ecs revolve around lit, so mainly looking to corroborate this with my class choices)?
Is this something i should discuss with my guidance counselor, or will it seem too boastful and self-aggrandizing (a lot of students at my school skip in math (but never english) and admin seem to hate it)? She’s writing my rec letter so I dont want her to hate me…
other options for literature classes in my high school are like contemporary lit or regular lit, which i’m not too keen on taking.
Thanks for all your help!
Do you have the option of dual enrolling? If so, a semester of 100-level Philosophy and Comparative Literature or Literature in Translation would show your interest for the subject as well as intellectual rigor and willingness to seek a challenge.
Before you talk to your guidance counselor, research your options at any local cc.
I agree…look at your local CC and see what English courses they have. Also talk to the English teacher about what English Lit would be like. Talk to your GC about what options there are.
