What to wear in college?

Where's the best place to buy plaid shirts that's not Abercrombie, Hollister, or other high school brands? I'm looking for shirts that fit, not something I would wear untucked and it look stupid. Basically a plaid shirt, that when worn untucked, looks fine. Ralph Lauren and Brooks Brothers seem to run quite large when untucked.

Another question. I dress sort of fratty. I like how Timberland shirts fit. What do you guys think about those?

I had a job where the required uniform was a white dress shirt, and dress pants or khakis. That was good enough for me. Since I also had a locker in my building, I kept a blazer and a tie in there so I could throw something on when corporate recruiters came to visit.

J Crew sells almost exclusively plaid shirts the last time I checked.

J Crew or Gap maybe.

J. Crew is good. You could also look into Banana Republic. If you’re not looking for specific stores, Macy’s/Nordstrom, etc. might have what you’re looking for.

I second deparment stores such as Macy’s and Nordstrom. You’ll definitely find nice shirts there. If you want cheaper TJ Maxx/Marshall’s type stores should work as well.

Why not go with Kohls as a nice compromise between overpriced stuff at mall stores and Marshall’s where it’s really really hit or miss?

Target Ross Marshalls Kmart Walmart if you’re on a budget

Are you looking at the classic/regular fits for RL and Brooks Brothers? Their slim fits don’t seem to have that problem, even for an Asian guy like me.

Also, I’ve been able to find some non-logo products at Abercrombie outlets if the logo is what you don’t like.

Can’t go wrong with Kohls. Also consider consignment stores like Goodwill or salvation army. I’ve gotten a lot of those kinds of shirts there dirt cheap and received lots of compliments on them.

^^ I’m not into second hand stuff or recommend unless its one of a kind

Kohl’s all the way. Old Navy. Unless you’re like rich or something, then Nordstrom’s, JCrew, Macy’s etc. Hit up the outlet malls too, great deals there. Ciao.

I wouldn’t rule out second hand. I’ve gotten a TON of barely used really nice clothes for cheap - Jcrew level type brands. Last month I wanted some dress pants from a certain store but $79 for one pair of pants was the lowest price they had at their online store. I searched Ebay for days and I paid 40 bucks total for a lot of 6 pairs and they’re brand new. Didn’t fit the seller. Win for me.

Personally second hand shops/sites would be the first places I would look for plaid shirts since they’ve been making them for forever. No one’s going to be able to tell if your shirt is from the a few years back or now if it’s in good condition. It’s not worth paying $30 bucks each for them.

I don’t know men’s clothes that well, but what about Lacoste and Express?

“Why not go with Kohls as a nice compromise between overpriced stuff at mall stores and Marshall’s where it’s really really hit or miss?”

This.

And I agree with gleekboy. Some second hand clothing is nice. I’ve found it’s difficult to find plaid, flannel, or other nice shirts in my size when I am there (many times they have XL that seems like an L in length, but then wide, which I can’t stand), but on occasion I will see a nice shirt I can get for $3-6. And $3 for a nice looking shirt? Heck…

Express has really nice plaid shirts. They can be expensive, ranging anywhere from 50-80 dollars each, but if you sign up for their emails and catch them at the right time (when they have sales) you can get really good deals. I often get coupons emailed from them that are like $15 off of a $30 dollar purchase, or $30 off of $75, etc. Right now they’re having a sale of 20% extra off of clearance already up to 70% off. I once got $80 dollar jeans for $18. :D
