WHAT to wear in WINTER???

Winter days in the Santa Barbara area are often warm and sunny, so students at Cate School might opt for a light jacket or sweater in the early morning / evening. The afternoon temperature during the winter season averages a pleasant 66F / 19C degrees.

My school allows clothes that normally would be out of dress code if they say ‘Peddie’ somewhere on them, so a lot of people just wear sweatshirts and long pants with boots. They always crank the heat up inside the buildings, so I dress in layers. Tights with a dress or skirt are always acceptable :)

Everybody has been saying that generally people wear cords and khakis. In the south, those don’t tend to be needed that much (well I wear a uniform to school so I don’t need them). Where could a girl buy those type of clothes (nice khakis/cords)? I know it won’t be needed to winter, but I still want to be prepared.

j. crew, gap, banana republic, abercrombie and fitch, even target or old navy (though if money is really an issue you can find good sales from good brands). However, i recommend waiting until you get there to get a feel for what to buy- you don’t want to buy a bunch of stuff that is way out of style. Besides it’ll be relatively warm for at least a month and a half before you absolutely NEED warm weather clothing (i prefer dresses and skirts to pants, but that’s just me).

btw, where do you live, urbanflop?

@urban flop: check out delia’s

ooooh Delia’s has so many awesome t-shirts!

I’ve gotten over their t-shirts[they are awesome though;)] but they have nice dresses and pants. Their shoes are especially nice and they have a wide variety. Its a nice alternative to AE A&F types.

I concur. I like AE and A&F [clearance A&F+on sale J.Crew=awesomeness], but Delia’s is more quirky and I can find little things to add to my wardrobe that fit my personality a little better. I LOVE to cook, to bear with me on this analogy: J. Crew, A&F, GAP, etc. are the base of the sauce- the drippings, the oil, the wine, what have you. But Delia’s, etc. are the herbs and spices- rosemary, thyme, sage, a little chili powder for some zing.

God, I need to get out more.

Hahaha Izzy, I love you.

Anyway…

Delia’s= an alternative to stores like A&F if you don’t like them. or if you grow bored w/ them (spices!)

THE REAL EXETER: WHAT YOU ARE ALLOWED TO WEAR
ignore the ebook
for guys:
tie (yes, you have to)
collored shirt (when it gets warm i have seen polos with ties, but PLEASE wear a button down)
any kind of pants/shorts you want
for girls:
no sweats
no sweatshirts
nothing with writting on it
that’s basically it

it really ranges from teacher to teacher, like my chem teacher let ppl wear atheltic gear and backwards baseball caps, and my spanish teacher measured skirts

Exeter does not allow blue denim, but colored denim is fine. Choate has restricted dress code- no more colored denim, except for white, I think.

when i went to visit new york city for new years (which is close enough in climate in my opinion), i wore two pairs of leggings underneath my pants. they are really easy to move in and they are really warm! plus, since its winter and you won’t be sweating, you can wear the leggings again the next day so you don’t run out of them too quickly. plus, since you will be wearing them under pants, they won’t be exposed to the outside world of dirt. lol

Saer, My son wears blue denim jeans at Exeter virtually every day of the week. Think you might have been misinformed about the Exeter dress code. Artsmart has it right.

Wow, thanks artsmart and Exeter123. Anything specific about dresses or tank tops?

Question for bean boots. I have the rubber mocs but am thinking of getting the regular boots too. Would it be worth it to get those to and bring it with me to boarding school? And, do they look absolutely terrible with clothing in the winter? I think the mocs are pretty ugly but I like how they are below the ankle. They just aren’t very practical for a lot of snow. If I do get the actual boot type what would you recommend to wear with it?

My son noted that they are extremely good at plowing the snow off the sidewalks – lots of rock salt/chemicals on the paths to melt any ice. He has some heavy duty boots, but didn’t have much call to use them last year even with a few heavy snow days. Issue might be slush at the curb as you cross the street, in particular as you get the Spring thaw. You’ll probably want the regular boots for playing in the snow rather than day to day getting around campus.

^it depends on the school. Middlesex is pretty good about shoveling, but countless time’s I’ve walked to class as it was snowing. It’s also much quicker to get places if you can just trudge through the snow rather than have to circumnavigate various ice patches/puddles/small piles of snow on the circle.

I’d say the boots are a good investment, and better looking than the mocs to boot [no pun intended]. As for outfits, you can pull off a rugged outdoorsy look with bean boots pretty easily [like for me, bean boots, black jeans or cords or something, sweater, scarf, plaid barbour jacket. it all looks very nice].

Oh okay. Thank you:)

Where can you get leggings/tights that are actually insulating?
