So I just started my second year of Community College, and I have 30 transferable credits and am on track to have all 60 and so on by the end of the school year. Applications are coming up rather soon and I am a little undecided on where to apply to.

I can qualify for the 4 free applications but I'm willing to spend money to apply to another school or two. Anyways I have a 3.9 transferable GPA and I'm a business major but also am considering economics.

The 4 schools I am looking at now:
UC Santa Cruz
UC Irvine
UCLA
UC Berkeley

I will have all the required classes for UCSC but will be missing at least 1 or 2 (Analytical Geometry 1 and 2) from the other schools.

What do you think my odds are of getting into these schools? Also do you suggest applying to any other schools, or taking economics instead (as I plan to get an MBA)?

Oh also, do I need to have SAT/ACT scores? I never took my SAT or ACT as I was always planning to go straight to JC. Are SAT/ACT scores required for transfers?

For a MBA you can have any degree. It does not matter. Business/Econ just helps since you enter already having a wealth of knowledge. As for econ v business, its your personal preference. Some schools offer sort of a hybrid of the two (Managerial Economics UCD, Management Science UCSD), and possibly UCLA not sure (Biz econ).

I don’t know what your ECs are or any work experience so I have no idea but your GPA is really good. Aim for Berkeley or UCLA. If those don’t work try to get into UCSD or UCD. I think you have a good shot at Berkeley or UCLA though.

My counselor never told me I had to do it im doing psych 10 (statistics but focused on use in experiments etc) and he said that counted for my requirement of a math although next semester I am doing Math 3a (which is i guess idk if its like the first half of calculus 1 or if its the first level of it). But im going for uci with a criminology major.
I’d be devastated if I screwed from uci now though…

@Emprex Awesome, thanks for the confidence I may have to switch my app from Irvine to UCSD or UCD, anyone know which of those 3 schools has the best program? Also Emprex as for extra-ciriculars I am an assistant soccer coach at my local high school so quite a few hours to add up, if that counts as an EC? Work, I’ve worked since I was about 15 for my parents business installing and fabricating signs.

@LAforLife, Where did you hear that? I haven’t heard of that before it would be a massive bummer as the entrance exam for CC’s is kind of ridiculous. I was going to go that route but even with summer school it was actually impossible for me to complete analytical geometry 1 and 2. I will have business calculus done though if that helps? Calc is not actually a requirement, just analytical geometry.

@rickyseg, you won’t need calc for your major no worries.

Woo, I can finally post again! It kept timing me out yesterday so sorry for the late responses.

@Emprex, Thank you for the confidence! Also, glad to see that you pointed out that UCSD and UCD have business degrees I was having a hard time figuring out what degree I was supposed to shoot for their. I may have to switch out Irvine for one of those, does anyone know which of those 3 (UCD, UCI, UCSD) has the best business program?
As for EC’s I am an assistant soccer coach at my local high school, if that counts? I was also thinking of joining the economics club at my school. As for work I worked as a paper boy when I was about 8 or 9, at sonic for a few months and have worked as a sign installer/fabricator since I was about 15.

@LAforLife, Where did you hear that? I’ve never heard of such a rule and it would be a massive bummer. Calc is not actually required for my degree anyways, the class I would be missing is Analytical Geometry 1 and 2. I will have business calc done if that helps?

@Ricky, Do not worry you do not need Calc for your degree (Lucky!).

Looks like the forums are out of whack or something.

MrRandall2 what LAforLife is saying I believe, and I also forgot to mention this, UCLA and UC Berkeley are very strict on having pre-reqs complete. Did you take calculus at all during CC? Berkeley and UCLA usually require 1 year calculus. If you are missing a pre-req or two, its a lot harder to get in even with a really high GPA. UCSD and UCD are more forgiving towards missing pre-reqs. UCI is sort of strict as well.

Out of UCD/UCSD/UCI imo I would rank it UCSD, UCD, UCI but it really doesn’t matter as they are all very good programs. Don’t ever base your choice on rankings or prestige. Since you are planning on getting your MBA, the ranking or name doesn’t matter. Your GPA, work experience, GMAT score etc. are all far more important.

That being said, recruitment opportunities are a lot better at UC Berkeley and UCLA and that may be an important factor in terms of getting a job, internship etc.

Mrandall3 is me as well I tried creating another account when mine could not post and now that is randomly popping up haha so sorry about that.

Well I am doing Business Calc right now, do you think that would count? Calc is not actually required for my degree, but I could do that over summer probably?
So as for UCD, UCSD, and UCI its all personal preference really hm. Interesting.

Well this is embarrassing I just realized Analytical Geo is Calc haha. Should I email one of the advisers and ask them if its advised that I take PreCalc next semester and Calc 1 over summer?

Ya, you have to have them done by Spring, or you will almost certainly be rejected. These 3 schools also have the best UC Business programs for both undergrad and graduate, so they won’t just overlook it.
