I'm new to this country, originally from Liechtenstein. I reckon i did okay my first year of high school. I received a 4.1 GPA, i am worried though because a couple of top students have higher GPA's than me. If i continue improving and gain perfect grades from sophomore year to senior year, will my chances still be hindered by my freshman year?

Let's say another student has 4.5,4.6,4.8,4.8 and I have 4.1,4.6,4.8,4.8 but i have better test scores, more AP's and extra-curriculars. Does that alleviate the low GPA i got freshman year?

I'm calculating it in razor thin margins because my school is ultra competitive and i want to know if i just "screwed" myself over because of my freshman GPA.

They are teasing you because of GPA envy! Don’t worry, you will be fine, just keep up the grades. Your other assets (ECs, SATs, etc. ) will balance out a small difference in GPA. And some top schools (Princeton, for one) do not even use freshman year grades when they recalculate your GPA. So it is only your classs rank which will continue to reflect 9th grade.

your high school must weight your gpa points, there is no way an unweighted can go over 4.0. Weighing GPA is so dumb…gives students a false sense of security and then BAM they get kicked in the face when colleges recalculate it and their actual GPA drops like a stone
