what’s your hook for getting? does any have really good speacial quailities? how do you get the admission’sofficers to be really interested in you?

I'm guessing my hook was basically taking every language course offered at my school and taking 4 semesters of college greek. That's the only thing I can think of that would really differentiate me from your average joe brown applicant.

i have no idea, actually. i'm still amazed that i got in, and i'm still afraid of getting a horribly thin envelope in the mail telling me they made a mistake.

ok, it's not that bad. seriously, i had little things going for me, like being an EMT on my town's first aid squad, but nothing amazing that would totally compensate for any shortcomings I may have had. (excuse the bad grammar!) but i really am amazed that i got in, it's like a never-ending dream!

I am dying to go to Brown, reading all of these threads only strengthens the fact that in a perfect workd, this is where I would go. I really feel that i have the quintessential Brown personality, but I feel like it would be easy enough for others to fake that on applications :-( I hope that next year I am in your situation, feeling amazed that I got in. I have really good grades and SATS, but I haven't taken the hardest possible courseload although I have mostly honors/AP. Does Brown really take personality into account as much as they say? Sorry if this isn't really on topic with the thread, you just inspired me funkyspoon!

gee thanks! i really expected to get rejected; it was such a surprise to find out that i had gotten in! anything is possible, i guess.

sign up for hard classes next year, and do your best to do well. my speculation is that they really do take personality into account, as that was one of the best things i had going for me. i guess a person could "fake" it, but keep in mind that your teachers and GC will also get a chance to describe your personality. in general, someone who makes stuff up just won't have a consistent application... in other words, you seem like an awesome applicant to brown. if you can convey that in your essays, that's great. if your teachers and GC can convey that in their recs, that's even better.

brown is an amazing place (it had better be!), and it would be great to have you there in 2 years!

THANK YOU! That's what I'm talking about, people like you--and I'd like to say myself--make it Brown such a good place. I was attracted to Brown right when I saw personal qualities above SATs in factors for admission. It is seriouosly the perfect place for me, I'm sure I'll apply ED. I have it all planned out if I get in; I'm going to jstu go crazy and write "BROWN" with a brown crayola marker on my chest haha. Well congratulations on your acceptance and thanks for your response. I'm gonna take 3 APs next year, so I'll have 5 by graduation. You know of any other schools with that Brown feel that aren't AS hard to get into?

Yes, good luck to you, david218. You sound like an excellent match for Brown.

I expected to be deferred. :o I have no idea what my hook was. (It seems like no one really does.) funkyspoon is right, though--it's like a good dream from which I haven't yet awakened.

Do you guys think that the interview is important?

Not very, no. The interview maybe helped me slightly.

I would think and hope that the interview is important. Most schools say that it doesn't really swing you one way or the other (unless youre insane), but it shows commitment. Thanks Tore, it actually means a lot to me that you say that. I wish you luck in getting in, I'll be eager to hear how you do.

Sorry, I thought you knew (for some reason) that I was accepted ED.

I guess Romance languages were (are) my hook... we'll have to wait and see if it works,
though. :D

I take French, Spanish, and Italian. I applied as a French major. I have received straight As in French (not even an A-!), got an 800 on the SAT II, and started the French Honor Society at my school. I don't know if this counts as a "hook," but it's the closest thing I've got. :o

God, I hope it works!

I love French :)

Oooo, well even better! Congratulations. I thought you meant you thought youd be deffered, and you were. Would say there is a chance for someone like me with a really good personality and good SATs/gpa, but who made some scheduling mistake freshman year and beacuse of their legacy, isnt in th most challenging courseload (but still pretty tough)? And what did you do when you found out? Must have been amazing

Moi aussi. Je l'adore.

Hey calidan, it's funny a lot of the people who are on the Brown boards were in our smart slacker thread. Interesting...

LOL this is true. In a way, that kind of typifies Brown. :)

I totally would consider myself a "smart slacker." When I visited Brown, I got the feeling that a lot of students there were this way, too ("slacker" more in the sense of "relaxed," though).

Yea definitley. That's the vibe I'm looking for. I just want to have amazing conversations with quirky intelligent people, haha.

Sounds good to me! That's exactly how college should be, anyway.

And everyone is so much more interested in the classes that they take because they are not forced upon the students. You only take classes that you are interested in, and I totally love and agree with that ideology. :)

Yea absolutely. I hope that it works out for people like us who by all means should (i wanted to do italics there on the "should" but couldnt figure out how) be at Brown. Hopefully the admissions people can pick out the poeple who really belong there I dunno. You think that being the start of an episode of a reality show on abcFamily would be a little quirky hook? It's abit of astretch, but either way itll make a good essay. I made a fool of myself haha
