What went down at the Brown Interview

Around thirty minutes ago, I had my interview with an alumni from Brown University. During the process, however, I was asked where else I had applied to in terms of universities. Of course, out of anxiety and nervousness, I honestly told the interviewer my list of schools. I don’t know about everyone else but it seemed inappropriate for her to inquire about my choice of schools. Of course, at the end of the interview, I reiterated that Brown University was my dream school and definitely at the top of my list but I still feel confused as to why I was asked such personal question. Can somebody elaborate on this or tell me if this is perfectly fine? I have seen numerous posts regarding interviews and previously read that interviewers were not supposed to ask questions like that. Thank you in advance for your valuable inputs.

A worried CC’er.

It won’t affect their write up on you, I honestly think that it has to do with their own curiosity. I have been asked this before, and it does not change their opinion of you. It feels very awkward at the time, but they do already know you have applied to other schools. To not answer would be strange, but by answering you are just being honest with them.

When i was interviewed for ED my interviewer asked me (off the record) what other schools were on my list. Don’t worry i agree with moonman676, its probably just out of curiosity that they ask, not an attempt to determine if brown is ur #1 school. I mean, i applied ED so obviously it was my first choice. (I got deferred by the way)

Good luck!

Interviewers are NOT supposed to ask you what other schools you applied to. If your interviewer includes that info in the write-up, admissions will ignore that information. And admissions assumes that everyone who applies to Brown wants to go there. You can tell the interviewer a hundred times that it is your dream school and that won’t affect your admissions one way or another. In fact, you could probably tell your interviewer that Brown is your third choice after Harvard and Yale, and it still wouldn’t affect your chances of admission (I’m dead serious about that).

Some interviewers don’t read instructions or ignore them. They are idiots, even though they went to Brown.

I had my interview this morning. I was in the same situation (interviewer asked where else I had applied) and fireandrain, your words are a welcome relief :)

Your last two lines made me chuckle :p

My interviewer asked me the same question for another school. I answered that I preferred not to answer and she was fine with that. Hopefully my Brown interviewer won’t ask me that question.

My interviewer was just curious as to how many colleges I applied. It was a great interview!
