What will a career in environmental policy look like?

Hi!
I was wondering what sorts of jobs can you get with a degree in environmental policy? I am thinking of changing my major from business to something related to environmentalism like environmental engineering/science/policy.

Would it be a good idea to double major in international relations or economics if I were to do environmental policy?
Thanks so much!

That’s a great question. I actually did a project on this last semester actually. The truth is there are a wide variety of jobs you can get with that. There are jobs related to food security, agricutlure, forestry, environmental journalism, environmental activism or advocacy, environmental teaching and education, study abroad related environmental programs, governmental agencies (EPA, Fisheries and Wildlife, etc), businesses that priortize environmentalism, environmental consulting, environmental departments at schools and colleges, research positions, and much more. I interviewed a bunch of people in these fields, their challenges, and what they found helpful. I can link you to it if you’d like in a PM, all different from different tracks.

Economics sounds like a good fit, especially if you are interested in policy work, there are several direct tie ins and you can justify rationale for action with your economics background. International relations, maybe less overlap, but could be useful with foreign affairs or international development/environmental governance work. Just depends on what you are interested in and your focus.

@shawnspencer Thanks so much for your reply.

That sounds like such a cool project! It would be great if you could send me the link.

I am really interested in policy + global policy, but mainly I just want a job that would help me make a difference in an environmental aspect.

Again, thanks for your help!

Actually I will just post it here: http://www.wm.edu/offices/career/students/career-major-exploration/future-of-green-careers/index.php. The project ended up interviewing more students who happened to intern at different agencies or recent grads, but the ones near the bottom are fully fledged adults I guess xD

This was one of the first years of the project, so hopefully the new interns will add more as we go forward!

Hope it helps!

Thanks so much!
