What will I need in order to have the chance to attend a decent prep school?

I’m currently finishing up my Freshman year in a private school in Toronto, Ontario. I’m typically an average student with an 80 average (the school system is different in Canada and an 80% is considered an A here) Anyways, It’s been my dream for so long to attend a BS in the New-England area / Upstate New York. However, I plan on applying to day schools in New York City as well (assuming I get my grades up my sophomore school). I am aware that Junior year is the most competitive year to apply to these schools and I was wondering if my grades freshman year will affect my acceptances to these schools. I haven’t taken the SSAT yet but I plan on taking some prep courses and take the SSAT after the start of the next school year so that I have time to prepare and get a decent score.

These are some schools I’m interested in applying:

Milbrook
Lawrenceville
Blair
Poly Prep
Nightingale-Bamford
Spence

Why not add all girls boarding schools to the mix, like Emma Willard, Westover, and Ethel Walker?

I’m more so interested in co-ed in terms of boarding schools.

That’s what a lot of the girls at those schools thought before actually researching the schools and visiting

All girls schools are always an option, I was accepted at one but preferred the co-ed environment of a different school. In my opinion, your list is very good, it has a wide range of attainability (though I don’t know much about their environments and academics). However, I would suggest applying as a repeat sophomore. If you enter these schools as a junior, you’ll only have a year to excel in extracurriculars and work on your college application.

These schools are all within reach for you. Don’t worry about your grades, as long as you improve. I went from all 3.0’s in seventh grade to all 4.0’s in ninth grade. My previous grades didn’t seem to have an impact, as I still had a very successful M10, even being accepted at my first choice. Showing improvement and letting the school know that you’re on an upward slope looks good. I’m sure you’ll get into these schools.
