What will life at Chapman be like?

That’s just a typical SoCal stereotype, everywhere you go you will (without a doubt) find people who are snobby and mean. Also, no one is going to force you to party – that’s your choice.

@Corinne92 and @alexandra8274 - I’m completely in the same boat! I just got accepted but I’m slightly intimidated because I’m not huge on partying either… and I’ve heard similar things… I’m just hoping they are wrong!

No offense but are you guys five year old children? Of course there is partying but that doesn’t mean you -have- to take part. That’s your choice, no one is going to force you.

And as for fake and mean people? You get them everywhere, get over it. It happens. Stop acting like children.

Actually Warehouse, I understand where KaliKris and alexandra are coming from. Right now I’m studying at a small university in Bournemouth (seaside town in South West England, for the Americans who don’t know  ) and because it’s quite small there’s not much for the students to do but party. I’m not into partying - in fact it’s one of my least favourite things - but it seems like you just can’t escape it here. Everyone’s always talking about drinking or partying and trying to get me to party (even though I tell people time and time again I don’t want to). The Student Union only seem to advertise parties and night club events. It gets quite annoying and one of the reasons why I’m applying to bigger universities with more things to do.

Of course, every university will have its partiers and “fake and mean people” like you say, but I think there are some places where the partying scene is difficult to escape. Having never been to Chapman I wouldn’t know if it were one of those places. However, judging by the diversity and amount of clubs and societies Chapman has (including a Nerdfighter’s Club that just sounds…amazing) I’m sure there will be plenty for non-partygoers to do. That’s my hope, anyway!

And KaliKris and alexandra: if we all end up at Chapman, there will be three of us who don’t like to party! We will have each other! Hahahaha. :)

Well for one, that’s Bournemouth University. Everyone knows it’s just partying there, if you didn’t do your research before you applied it’s pretty much your fault. Also, you just backed my point up – if you can’t handle individuals talking about drinking, partying, sex, drugs or whatever then you shouldn’t be attending University.

And the party scene is easy to escape, your all young adults going to University to study and earn a degree. Not a fifteen year old looking to get “laid” through drinking and ‘acting-a-fool’. If you can’t say no, that says a lot about you. I am not attacking anyone; I am just tired of seeing people whine about parties like they have to do it. If you don’t like partying, that’s good but it doesn’t mean other people shouldn’t party because you think it will be a distraction.

Actually Warehouse, I’m at Arts University College at Bournemouth. And I used to live in China before I came to the UK. I knew very little about the town Bournemouth’s reputation before I went. I’m not saying other people shouldn’t party - of course not! Some of my friends here love a good party. It’s just tough sometimes to find people who don’t like to party, that’s all.

Anyway I’m not interested in fighting about it. This is an American college forum, not a British one!

Good luck to everyone whose still waiting. My fingers are crossed for all of us!

I wasn’t fighting, sorry if I came across aggressive. And I understand that it’s hard to find people who don’t party. And yes, good luck to everyone who is still waiting.

Hey students,
Please note that Chapman has a student conduct code you must follow. If you plan on attending Chapman, I suggest you read through their conduct code policies of the university. Please remember that this is an academic institution and Chapman has an excellent reputation.

Chapman has always been my son’s #1 choice. We live about 20 minutes away, so we hear a lot about Chapman- excessive partying is not something I hear about at Chapman and is not one of my concerns as a parent. One of the things that my son often says about Chapman is that the students “feel more like me”. Having lived on both the East (Boston) and West coasts, I don’t think of Californians as being “fake or phony”. I think the difference you will find is that Californians (as compared to people from the East Coast) tend to be a bit more laid back and maybe place a higher degree of importance on fitness and appearance- we are in shorts a lot! Never-the-less, Chapman is increasingly more selective and you need to be a serious student to be admitted.

So, my son has this idea that he’ll go skiing in the morning and to a bonfire at the beach in the afternoon, and to that I say hahaha! Aa a student at Chapman I suspect you will take advantage of the beach quite a bit. Our beaches are very different than those on the East Coast (except maybe the Cape). The sand is soft, no bugs, and waves so you can surf or boogie board! But the water is much colder than what you will be used to. The beach is about 20 minutes from Chapman- so all you’ll need is a friend with a car! The skiing, as someone said, is 2 hours away. We never ski locally. It’s not that good, it’s crowded, and it’s faster to fly to Utah! That being said, So Cal skiing is better than anything you’ll see on the East Coast. It’s more likely that you’ll drive up with friends for a weekend Mammoth trip once or twice in a season (6 hour drive).

I think I read that 67% of the students are from Cal, and I suspect that many of them will have cars. We have no public transportation here, so if you don’t have a car make friends with people who do! My biggest concern, is that my son comes home every weekend with his laundry! I’m not sure about that one but it concerns me. University of Washington is, as I understand it, a very big suitcase school, so you’ll have that issue there as well.

I’ve actually heard good things about Tulane, so that’s a good option. I don’t think the other schools meet your criterion. I’m not sure how the school spirit is with respect to sports at Chapman

In short, if you want to go to a party, you’ll find one.
Chapman is right next to the beach and has fantastic weather.
You will get students of every type at every college in the nation.
Orange County is in the middle of Southern California, which is amazing. 2 hours up is beautiful Santa Barbara, 1 hour down is San Diego. And everything in between like LA and Long Beach and Newport are less.
Chapman is amazing.
I want to attend.
The end.
Get me my acceptance letter and financial aid package noooowwwwww.

Oh, and I live in Northern California, and while San Francisco is better than any city in Southern California, So Cal in general is much more desirable to me. Bladow. Class of 2015 yeee!

@flippyadomp thank you for understanding and defending us! haha :] and YES at least that’s three of us who don’t party if we end up there! ahahaa :)))

@2flipper2 thanks for your input - it’s really helpful hearing from different points of view

@annathatshibby hahahaa yessssss, I have to agree with your statement about San Francisco being the best city in cali. norcal represent.

Ah my Webadvisor changed one week ago so I think it will be in my mailbox by today! Hopefully I’ll be able to see all of you guys next year! :)

I liked your response so I hope you don’t mind me asking a frank question. My concern with Chapman is only socially as I’m wondering if it tends to be very right wing and conservative like most of orange county. No judgement at all I’m just wondering if my daughter would fit in there as she pretty liberal and in fact is a Bernie Sanders fan at the moment. Thank you for any insight.

how socially conservative is Chapman. Since it’s in Orange County it has a reputation as being fairly “right wing” and I’m wondering if this is true.

@mumkee haha I just found this thread right now, and last election’s results revealed that Orange County flipped from red to blue! Hopefully your daughter is doing well at Chapman!

helpful comments. Thanks!
