That makes sense. I’m in the North, so golf attire and attire in general is of course suited for colder weather.

Yes, you are correct. Sorry I did not take that into account, but I guess y’all might have two or three months of school when y’all can wear shorts.

Oxford-cloth button down shirt
Chinos
Leather shoes.

That looks so dressed up… I mean, do what you want y’know, but I can’t imagine getting so dressed up just to go to classes. Maybe for going out or on the weekends.

I consider wearing a suit dressed up. But that picture right there is just looking nice and put together or casual.

Weird lol.

I guess it is casual, yes, but it looks like something you’d see on the piers of Cape Cod, not a college campus. Eh.

I agree, that is a normal outfit for me in the late fall to early spring.

It looks like something you would see at my school.

Baelor, I do not want to assume, so where do you attend school?

Yeah you totally wouldn’t see that at my school, except by the b-school kids.

I agree. That dude in the picture isn’t exactly “dressed up” but certainly isn’t casual as far as college guys go. Only expect guys to look like that on certain east coast campuses.

^ This is true from my experience.

Princeton. Did that fit into your assumptions?

about right, at first i thought maybe because of your name Baylor, but figured it was an elite east coast school

Getting back to the OP… why are you picking out your son’s clothes? Lol. He’s going to college! He’s going to wear what he wants to wear whether you buy his clothes or not. Just give him some money, let him buy what he wants, etc. He’ll need a nice pair of pants or two and a nice shirt or two, but really the majority of college students go to class in jeans and a shirt. Heck, I go in my pajamas often times (but I am a girl).

No Jeans? No sneakers of any kind? Wow. I actually like most of the stuff you list but only the hardcore New England boarding school crowd dresses exclusively like this.

Darn, i forgot to add jeans. I meant to but looked over it, and sneakers as well, however, i only wear sneakers for working out and don’t consider them part of my wardrobe. Though i do own a pair of old school vans. Also I am not from New England and did not go to boarding school.

Quoted for truth. I did the New England boarding school and I’m doing the public state college. Trust me, the styles are not similar.

Many people giving you advice sound like they don’t attend public college. Certainly your kid should choose the style he’s comfortable with, but you should know that the styles given here aren’t the norm at public schools–at least here at UW.

The typical closet will depend on the type of school the guy’s attending. Very few collars during class hours here. It’s just college gear, tshirts, jeans, or shorts. Sweats and athletic shorts are common, too, even though it’s certainly not well-dressed.

I was at Princeton the other day… beautiful campus. Kinda makes me wish I had studied harder in high school (except it’s still in the same climate zone in DC and I hate this climate zone) :P

And yeah justtotalk makes a good point. At UMD it’s mostly jeans and t-shirts. Hell my roommate was the rare exception (he would often wear a nice button-down tucked into some sort of salmon shorts or plaid shorts, with boat shoes etc).

We get all types in NYC, it’s pretty diverse with everything from preppy to high-fashion to hipsters. I grew up in a preppy town where Vineyard Vines and the like was common, so it was nice to see some diversity when I moved to the city. Lots of people here seem very fashion-conscious but overall it’s casual. I personally don’t like the skinny black hipster jean on guys (isn’t it uncomfortable?) but to each his own. I’ve never seen anyone in PJ’s either, I don’t know why people would wear those out of the dorm - are you really too lazy to even change into sweats or yoga pants? :/

As a girl I generally wear jeans with a nice top (not too dressy) on a daily basis. In the summer, I wear a lot of sundresses and skirts. Only get dressed up (in heels and such) when I go out or something.

But basically if you wear jeans and a t-shirt, I don’t think you would stand out on any campus. Even at stereotypically “rich kids schools” I don’t think this would stand out.

I wish we could post pics on this site! : )
