What will the well dressed Freshman guy be wearing this fall?

Brown14, not trying to argue with you, but I disagree. What if you actually boat? And also is it is essential to the southern tux. And I’m not preppy at all, I just wear them occasionally but they are my dress shoes besides my tuxedo shoes.

“it is essential to the southern tux…”

^ I’m sure they look better in the south, but up here in the northeast they stick out like a sore thumb to me. The only people who boat in Jersey are the ones who live on the shore, but otherwise it just looks weird.

that is valid, i was just using my knowledge to give advice.

I don’t look good in sneakers. I do look good in Sperrys.

There’s no question as to which I should wear – the more appropriate shoe. Polos and sneakers almost never go well together, in addition.

What’s wrong with a parent making minor decisions that the child is unwilling to make or incapable of making?

^ I highly doubt someone going off to college is incapable of making decisions regarding his or her own wardrobe.

^You’ll be surprised. There’s plenty of rich kids that never had a job or parents buy them everything.

http://streetetiquette.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/MG_3515.jpg

^In this photo the guy is wearing a light brown belt and gray slip-ons. Is it only when wearing a suit that the belt should match the shoes?

Also is it “hipster” to have chrono rolls?

This thread is hilariously preppy and filled with tools. Seriously, do not wear boat shoes or old people clothes in college. Just don’t do it.

Sneakers, nice flip-flops, maybe a dress shoe but use sparingly. T shirts (plain, sports team, college), maybe a few polos, some cargo or party shorts, some jeans, some workout/chill tees, some gym shorts, maybe one pair of dress shirt/tie/khakis, some sweatshirts, a jacket, a few hats, and some belts.

Don’t really need a suit IMO.

Pig eyes, tons of guys don’t really care that much about clothes. Not a big deal for a mom to care. She shouldn’t be getting him stuff randomly but it is ok for her to care.

You would be surprised. Some of the things I see at college should never be worn by anybody.

I do notice when they don’t match, so I generally always match them.

That statement is hilariously wrong. Have you been to some college campuses? Almost everyone wears boat shoes.

@4.340

What are old peoples’ clothes? Have you been to college yet?

Yes, I’ve been to college campuses. At my school less than 15% wear frat daddy clothes. Very similar at UMD.

And I know even less people do that on the West Coast.

Most colleges aren’t overflowing with elitist tools. Your viewpoint is quite skewed.

BTW, even a school like Princeton isn’t that heavily populated with guys wearing boat shoes. Stop overstating it. A lot of people may wear them but not almost everyone. C’mon. 10% of every college is filled with complete losers who wear disgusting clothes.

Haha, I find highly bizarre too. But considering this is CC and a lot of threads here ask things like “Which classes should I take?”, “How many shoes should I bring?”, “What type of pants should I wear?”–where it’s normal to see people requiring help making basic decisions and seem to incapable of functioning-- I can understand why few others are concerned.

Somebody who, I’m assuming is at least 18, should be able to pick out his own clothes.

^ Old people’s clothes? lol How old are you?

Have you BEEN to Princeton? I am not at all overstating. On another thread someone said, “OMG no one wears Brooks Brothers in college.” I could not help myself, I LOLed.

Almost every guy owns them, most wear them regularly. That is not an overstatement.

You sound like a complete girl.

Then pretentious and girly am I.

Romani . . . If you look at my posts I did not say a word about picking out my son’s clothes. I’m paying the bill and will be going along. He’s a very stubborn kid and will buy what he wants but will also occasionally open up to suggestions. That’s all I’m hoping for.

So just settle down already!!

^First off, I’m not worked up. Secondly, you went on a forum asking what kind of clothes your kid should wear. Usually that implies that YOU are picking them out for him as YOU are the one asking.

My question was whether or not it was normal to have a parent inquiring about what their college age kid should be wearing. That is not normal in my neck of the woods, that’s all.

Well dressed and freshman are oxymorons.

^ You seem a little too wrapped up in what’s “normal.” It’s like you’re saying OMG – this is different than what I’d do therefore it’s wrong.

Don’t over think it – I’m curious about what the college-age trends are right now. So shoot me.

I refuse. However, since you’re asking about trends not just what our personal style is, you should tell us if it’s a public or private college. Very different atmosphere–as the debate has shown.

At my boarding school, 50-75% dressed like Baelor’s recommendations. Here at UW Madison, very few dress so formally.
