I used 'you' a lot. Since I wrote my essays in this nifty second person speak that would either drive you insane or make you instantly accept me.

You bask in the audiences raging clamor, the solid, cool form of your guitar calming your frenzied nerves. You think to yourself...

Supposedly immerses the reader or something like that.

^ I've always hated that.
It's like when I have to judge the novices in debate and they say, "I know you're a smart person," I don't care if that was a compliment, you don't know me don't tell me something about myself.

I only used second person for the commonapp - I think my teachers would lynch me if I did it for HS essays. Most people do hate it when you talk to someone who says 'you this you that' but I kind of did it from a 'you get the chance to role-play as me'.

"Simply" as in, "He simply didn't think it through."
"Rather" as in, "I rather like that chair" or "That was rather rash."
Other than that, I have words I'll hear and try to incorporate into essays more often. For example, "diminutive" is the word of the moment. My writing style is informal and, unfortunately, rather offensive. Some people like that...some reeeeally don't.
