What would an average sophomore...

What math course would an average sophomore in America take?

I'm just wondering how it compares to my school outside of America.

Would one take Algebra 2 or Geometry 1 or something because most people on this board seem to be geniuses taking Calculus and stuff as Freshmen but I was wondering is that the norm? or do most kids take other stuff?

hs sophomore - at some schools the norm would be geometry some take algebra II, but a lot others are able to take pre-calc and ap calculus as sophomores

Algebra II is a norm. I'm taking Pre-calc, there was a chance to take AP Calc with summer school though.

Average by normal standards? Geometry, I would say. In my school system, geometry is "regular" course level for sophomores.

Average by CC standards? Probably pre-calc. Or higher...

Most people take Geometry and others who are smarter take Algebra II or Pre-Calc, or even AP Calc (and might I just add those people are soooo lucky to take them as sophmores!!)

Would competitive universities frown upon people who say took Geometry at that time as opposed to taking Calc?

Like would the person who took Calc as a sophomore have a much of an advantage in college admissions compared to the guy who took Algebra 2 or something as a sophomore?

I really hope not because I am only going to be in Alg II and that is the highest you can be in at my school... so hopefully they look at the oppertunities you were given and if you took advantage of them.

Algebra II is what most people take. However I do know kids who take pre-Calculus as sophomores, and even a kid who took Calculus as a hs freshman. I don't think it would especially help with admissions, although it shows you're very good at math everyone learns the same thing in the end anyway, just at different times.

I took algebra II last year (freshmen year). Sophmore year I'm taking geometry since my school doesn't let me take more advanced math classes.

I took Geometry and Algebra II in 9th grade (block schedule), that was the highest without summer schools, et cetera..

My school:
Normal People - Geometry
Advanced People - Algebra II
Super Advanced People - Pre-Calc
Super Super Advanced - Calc BC

In my school...
About 1/3 of sophomores take geometry and another 1/3 takes algebra II. About 1/4 take advanced algebra II honors and the few that remain take precalculus honors.

Average
9th:Algebra 1
10th:Geometry
11:Algebra 2

At my school - probably Algebra 3 and/or Geometry.

Kids that hate math, etc. - probably Algebra 2.
Top 25% of Math Students - Trig and possibly PreCalc.

Most people take algebra I as freshman so the average sophomore at my school would take geometry. Algebra II is for the smart sophomore. For the super smart it's precalulus. For the smart of the super smart, it's calculus.

Here's the breakdown of what my grade took last year (sophomore year) at my school:

The ones who aren't the best math students (about 5-6 kids): Algebra I
About 1/3 of my grade: Geometry
About 1/2 of my grade: Algebra II
The rest: Pre IB Math (Functions, Stat, Trig, aka FST.)

I took Algebra 2 last year and Geometry this year (soph). No one takes higher than that. Precalc is for advanced juniors and AP(or honors) calc is for seniors.

I took Algebra 2 and Geometry last year, kinda like Mr Chipset, and will take Pre Calc Next year. Man I wished there was some kind of accelerated AP Calc AB and Pre calc course in my school. I also never took algebra 1. They let me skip it because I had a 650 when I took it in 7th grade for this Duke thing.

Geometry is the Normal Course.
Algebra 1-Freshman
Geometry-Sophmore
Algebra 2-Junior
Pre-Calculus Senior

Kids are in high levels as well but that is only if they did well in middle school math classes.

At my high school, if you took Algebra I as a freshman, you take Geometry as a sophomore. If you took Algebra I and then summer geometry (5 week course), you take Alg II/trig (this is what I did). If you took Algebra II as a freshman (a lot of kids actually), you generally also take summer geometry and then Alg III/trig as a sophomore. And if you were one of the few (20 kids or so) who took geometry as a freshman, you take Alg III/trig as a sophomore.
