What would be my chances for most uc's (including LA and B) with my situation?

Hi. I'm an asian male. My story is pretty long and complicated, but interesting at the same time. If you could PLEASE bear with me, I would appreciate it completely.

I just finished my 9th grade year (Class of 2013). The school I went to is the 4th best in the nation, 1st in the county, and 2nd in the state of California.

My grades:
English 1H: B-/B+
Alg2/Trig: B/B
Biology H: C-/A-
Spanish 2: B-/B-
Orchestra: A/A
P.E. :A/A
Health/Business: B+/A
Learning Skills: A/A

As you can see, they pretty much sucked. But I know for a fact that the reason for this is because my school's curriculum is CRAZY. This year, only 3 people in my grade (all asian females) received 4.0s (UW) with all their grades on the borderline (A-). On top of that, NO ONE in my grade took any AP classes.

However, I am considering switching my school to an easier one. This school, at the same time, is the 2nd best in our district (after the other one) and is the 8th best in Orange County. If I switch, I know for a fact that I could get straight A's. So this is what I'm planning it to look like if I decide to switch schools (might change courses though. Not sure).

Sophomore: All A's
• World History HP
• English II HP
• Pre-Calculus HP
• Chemistry P (Honors is not offered)
• Spanish 3
• Comp Sci. 1

Junior: All A's
• AP Eng. Lang. Composition
• AP US History (might do non AP, non honors)
• AP Calculus
• AP Comp Sci. A
• Physics HP
• Multimedia Productions

Senior: All A's
• AP English Lit
• AP Gov/Econ
• AP Statistics
• AP Comp Sci. AB
• Multimedia Production/Design

At my old school, I did volleyball (JV).
If I move, I probably would only do Cross Country for the next 3 years (new sport)

So, I know that I could get all A's and that I would be one of the top in my class. My only question is: Would it hurt my chances of college if I decide to move from a high ranked school to an easier one? I know that UC's only look at 10th and 11th grade, but seeing that I moved schools, would my chances lower?

If you could please answer me, I would be very grateful!! THANK YOU!

I’m assuming you are at Troy? There are tons of kids wanting to go there, so if you feel you could do better with less stress elsewhere, I would transfer. As a parent, I would not subject my child to that kind of environment. My D went to a very competetive H.S., but no where along the lines of Troy. That being said, my D’s top LAC admits Troy grads every year, they do have a great reputation. Only you (along with your parents) can make the judgement call on this issue. The higher GPA + class rank at another school would trump the school (if indeed I am correct on my guess) reputation, IMO.

Actually, I am at Oxford Academy in Cypress, CA. Troy HS is 2nd in the County, not sure in state, and I think 31 in the nation.

Sorry for assuming Troy. I don’t know anything about your school, but my personal feelings are still the same. If your school is too much of a pressure cooker and you think you can be at the top of your class at another with a considerably higher GPA, yet still good school, I personally would have my child change schools. What is your parents position on this? Again, this is just my opinion. Good luck.

Haha, It’s ok. Im DEFINITE that my grades could rocket up and I could be at the top of my class at my home school. (853 API out of 1000). It is a “california distinguished school” but I dont know if that does anything (haha). My mom, a typical asian parent, wants me to stay at my current school because she is able to brag about me going to a school that is “4th best in the nation.” I tell her that in 3 years she can say I go to berkeley or something, but she does not care. She only cares about the present, apparantly. She also says that she doesn’t want me moving, even if i can get straight a’s, because if I move schools, “colleges won’t accept me at all.” but i personally think that’s just an excuse (which is why i made this thread.) But yea, I want to get opinions on my situation. I DESPERATELY WANT TO MOVE. I feel WAY subpar at Oxford. :(

I have no idea, honestly. My friend is in the same situation, but he goes to Whitney High rather than Oxford. (I hear theyre rivals :O). But yea, I wish you luck in your endeavor.!

Oh, also I heard that colleges don’t care, but depends on which ones.

Please don’t regret staying there and move for your sophomore year. Unfortunately, I have had VERY similar experiences at Troy HS. I also felt inadequate with my unimpressive grades at Troy. I, stupidly, attempted to continue my sophomore year in Troy and failed miserably with the bulk of my grades at the B/C level. Then, I realized that I needed to change schools and went back to my home HS which is in Diamond Bar. (which is still pretty good) In my junior year, I got straight A’s and a B+. Getting straight A’s in the other school looks much better than B’s in Oxford. (and you lose much of the stress!) DO NOT make the same mistake I did and stay there for one more year. I usually just observe in forums, but I had to voice my opinion in this situation.

P.S. My grades in my freshman year were very similar to your grades albeit different classes.

P.P.S. You really need to tell your mom to stop being selfish and show your adamant support for the other school. She won’t be bragging when you can’t get in a college due to your lackluster grades.

To tophery: Thanks so much. I think i made my decision now, but my mom is really gonna be hard to convince :x
