I'm looking to apply early decision to W&M this year. I took the SAT last year, and my scores were 1270/1600 or, with the writing section, 1960/2400. More specifically, they are 700 for critical reading, 570 for mathematics, and 690 for writing. I know these scores are not so good compared to others' scores in this forum, so I'm wondering if I should retake the SAT in October or, instead, take three SAT Subject Tests (US History, Biology, and Chemistry). What would look better for the application?

If it's any help, my GPA is (unweighted) 3.52 and (weighted) 3.8. I am taking 2 AP classes this year (and that's all I've taken throughout high school). I've also taken 4 Honors classes throughout high school. I know that my GPA, SAT scores, and curriculum look like a joke compared to everyone else's here, but I'm certain that I want to go to W&M, so I'm going to apply early decision. The worst that could happen is that I could be rejected, and then I'll have to go to college elsewhere. Life goes on.

So, yeah, what do you think would look best on the application for W&M: an improved set of SAT scores or three SAT Subject Tests?

As the Subject tests are an optional part of an application; being optional, they have little importance, while the SAT itself is one of the primary factors evaluated. From that, you should be able to get your answer.

Right now, your math+reading score is just outside the middle 50% (ignore the Writing section) - as it’s superscored, if it were me, I’d plan to re-take the SAT and really focus on math. And don’t be discouraged, I know someone who increased their math score 110 points from Junior year SAT to Senior.

Problem is, if you’re applying ED, you don’t have a whole lot of time to prepare. If you haven’t done so, taking a number of simulated SAT tests can, by itself, improve your score pretty dramatically, just by getting you more comfortable with the test format and style of questions. Obviously, there’s a limit to how much this will help.

You might also consider the ACT - some test better on one than the other.

Keep in mind that other schools you may apply to might require Subject tests, so you should check that out as well, and make sure you can fit them into the test schedule.

Here’s the thing - you’ll need to take the October 9th SAT test to have those scores available for ED - and the October 9th window registration window is closing – fast. If you’re gonna take it, better register today…

Definitely spend your time and energy (as far as your application to W&M is concerned) retaking the SAT. W&M neither requires nor recommends SAT II Subjects tests unless you’re homeschooled. Generally, we receive the Oct. scores before we make final decisions on ED applicants. Just be sure you indicate that you’re taking the Oct. test in the standardized testing portion of the app so we know to be on the lookout for your scores.

We combine your best critical reading with your best math so taking the test again can’t hurt you. You can also try the ACT but I believe the next test date is November and those scores won’t reach us before ED letters are mailed.

Great attitude by the way about applying. I always tell applicants that they’ll never know if they could have gotten in unless they try and you seem to have a good attitude about the possible outcomes.

Thank you very much for the replies, everyone. I’m sorry I never got back to any of you. I did read them, and I took your advice and rescheduled to take the SAT (the one with CR, math, and writing–can’t remember it’s name), which I took today. So, yeah, thanks for the good advice. Good luck with your applications!
