Whatcha Doin' - July 4th Weekend Edition

Any plans for the long weekend? Picnics, fireworks, home projects, get aways?

Long weekend for me includes Monday as the holiday. No out of the unusual plans. Maybe a dip at my brother/SIL pool. A couple of family members coming for dinner tonight casually.

There is a local ice cream shop that I’ve been DYING to go to for their new ice cream nachos - might have to make that happen! (cone chips, soft serve, choices of topping syrups and toppings like nuts or candy add on’s served in a typical nacho cardboard tray!)

We’re tentatively planning to attend the annual 4th of July picnic/potluck celebration that the residents of our friend’s Maine island hold every year, but the forecast for Sunday is 62 and showers, so it may be cancelled as they had already moved it from Saturday to Sunday due to weather. If we don’t go, we’ll enjoy the lovely cool, rainy weather here at the cabin and plan a special meal. Cooking in our “new” kitchen is a lot of fun. In fact, everything about this new place is fun. We’re just happy to be in Maine.

Maybe the parade in the morning. DD’19 will be home from her camp job Saturday afternoon through Tuesday morning so she will enjoy the break from 17 hour work days. She tells me we are going to watch The Chosen series (I’ve already watched several but she’ll need to start at the beginning.) Might go biking.

We have plans to attend a cookout at a friend’s house tomorrow - the event was actually postponed from Memorial Day weekend, as it got rained out. The forecast is not looking good for it happening this time, either.

Other than that, will probably hit the beach for a bit Sunday and Monday. No fireworks scheduled for anywhere around here.

Going to a barbecue at friends on the 4th and that night we will walk to the beach to watch fireworks. We will probably do a long hike tomorrow and get some things done around the house.

Are most places having the usual firework displays? I know originally our city and suburb ones were cancelled but then added back in.

I don’t think I’m going to do anything special. H is at FIL’s enjoying time with his sailboat, FIL and BIL (with my encouragement to be there). I’m at our farm on foal watch with one son and DIL. My mom’s b-day was July 4th and she died just two weeks later, two years ago. My mind is reliving my/her past 3 months from May to July so I’m probably just going to allow myself to grieve while keeping the critters content here on the farm.

I don’t know if the 4th will ever have a different meaning to me in the future. Time will tell. Human grieving is such an unpredictable thing. I expected this last year (and felt it), but thought this year would be different.

Our city is having them. They had them last year! We won’t be seeing them. We are going to DC to see older S/GF. They moved into a new apartment last weekend. They are going to a barbecue with friends on Sunday, so H & I are going to the Dulles Smithsonian. They have an X-Wing Fighter! (nerd alert) Later, the kids will come to the hotel and watch the D.C. fireworks which are supposed to go off at 9:09pm. lol.

We will be arriving back home after being at Acadia National Park all this week. Today is both D’s 19th birthday and my mom and dad’s 55th anniversary. We will be having a combined cookout party and we can watch the town fireworks from our backyard!

Nothing going on here. We had dinner out with friends last night but their D and SIL are coming in today so we won’t be seeing them on the weekend. Our very close friends we would normally get together with moved out of state this week… S is still traveling out west and D and SIL have their own travel plans.

So it’s just us.

“Liking” all these responses - but the like button won’t work for me today - happens now and then!

We’re going to Steamboat Springs for the long weekend. We’ll enjoy the parade and the Jumping Extravaganza (summer ski jumping), but there won’t be any fireworks because of high fire danger. We’ll celebrate with a cookout and sparklers at the cabin.

Seattle canceled its show but some surrounding cities will have them. We are so dry already the officials are pleading with folks not to set off any home shows.

No big plans - perhaps more gardening if the rain holds off. D doesn’t have the time off and S has plans with friends all weekend, so it’s just us. And we are not quite in the mood to socialize.

S did say he might be able to get tickets to the Boston Pops concert in Tanglewood. They are holding the concert there and the fireworks on the Boston common, rather than the usual Esplanade location.

We are driving 3.5 hours to our cottage. There will be fireworks over the lake on Saturday, and we’ll take the boat out to get a front row seat (no bugs on the water!). S will join us. We’ll come home early Monday, and D will come over for a couple hours with our GD. Hopefully, it will be a nice, relaxing weekend. The weather is absolutely perfect today!

D is making a spontaneous visit home for the weekend, so now it’s way more festive than expected! We’ll have a cookout, view the fireworks if they’re not rained out, and I’m going to take advantage of the cooler weather to make blueberry muffins.

San Diego is doing the Big Bay Boom this year. We bought tickets a few weeks ago for a sailing on a 139 foot replica of the yacht for which America’s Cup was named. We’ll be boarding at a marina close to our house, sailing around the bay past everyone gathered for the fireworks, lowering sails in front of the USS Midway museum, eating a traditional (hamburgers etc.) supper, then mooring into prime position for the fireworks. It’s a splurge but not outrageous!

Traditionally we’ve gone for breakfast at a cafe on the pier in our little town, but not this year.

Well, we’re HOPING to pick up our son from the airport Sunday morning after he flies here from Lebanon. But he lost his wallet which contained his residency permit and I guess he didn’t have a copy of it (we will suggest he do that in the future!). So he may get to the airport and not be allowed to leave, or they might not let him back in when he returns. We suggested he might want to cancel his trip, but he’s decided to go for it. The original purpose of his trip was to get vaccinated, but he just learned he can get a shot for sure two weeks from now in Beirut. Poor guy. He feels stuck between a rock and a hard place.

We are planning to go on two separate day hikes to a waterfall and a pair of state parks, have a bonfire in the yard, go to a gluten free food truck for funnel cake, and have an at-home movie marathon. My husband actually has a four day weekend, and my older daughter has Monday off from school, so we are very much looking forward to the family time. We considered going up north to camp again, but it’s even supposed to be blistering hot up by the campground so I decided I prefer my bed. Ha. We aren’t seeing fireworks this year. Apparently our new town doesn’t do them, lots of surrounding towns have canceled, and we don’t think it’s worth it for a far flung journey. I just want to relax and have fun before driving to the east coast next Friday.

Friends supposed to be driving down from another part of Florida tomorrow. We are in wait and see mode because of Elsa. Timing makes it hard for them to know what to do since it’s likely another 36 hours until a clearer storm track is known, and they planned to head down about 18 hours from now.
