Whatcha Doin' - July 4th Weekend Edition

Nothing special going on here. We are planning a 40-50 mile bike ride on the 4th, because the weather is looking pretty good. We haven’t gone to fireworks since our kids were still interested (probably 10 years now).

Already enjoying the holiday weekend - it is a beautiful evening so sitting out on the porch. My husband and one of my sons went to the Nats game so just got take out for dinner for the rest of us. I’m trying to keep my dog calm as there are several people setting off fireworks. He was outside with me earlier and hiding in the bushes when he heard kids down the street setting off firecrackers.

I have the day to myself tomorrow as my kids are all working and my husband is going golfing. I will probably go out on my paddle board in the morning before the water gets too busy with boaters. Sunday we are going to a cookout that one of my husband’s college friends is hosting. I’m totally not looking forward to it but we had been blowing off his invitations several times so dh felt we needed to accept this time. Of course the very next day my parents invited us to come to their house and I’d much rather go there! I already have a ready made excuse to leave early as there are several fireworks displays that go off around my neighborhood on the 4th. Using my poor old dog as an excuse - need to get home in time to make sure he is not getting stressed out.

Monday is not much of a holiday for us - kids are back at work. Dh does not have to work, but he will probably go golfing.

We had an invite to go to a cottage but my husband is on call this weekend, so we went last weekend instead. Probably a better plan since the 4th is always so busy.

We are playing golf with another couple today, I think we will probably go eat afterwards but no firm plans.

Tomorrow we have an errand to do that’s 2 hours from our house. Will have lunch afterwards as that’s my plan.

Monday we will try and not leave our house as the traffic will be insane as our town is an artery for tourists going downstate after the long weekend. Will putter around the house and may play golf.

It’s been a busy summer so this low key weekend is very much needed.

We were supposed to have family with us this weekend but there was an unexpected change of plans. D is out of town with friends so H and I will go kayaking a bunch and we’re having friends over tonight for dinner.

Our town cancelled their fireworks show for which my dog is eternally grateful.

Staycationing at home; probably kayaking over to the bar to catch some Uefa Euro, hang out at the pool, maybe visit a couple more of the waterfalls in our county and sit by the fire.

The high temp here is going to be about 60. I have beef stew in my crockpot!

Ugh, son decided it wasn’t worth the risk. A Syrian friend who has lived in Lebanon for years told him there was a good chance an official would not approve of the missing visa and blacklist him immediately, putting him on the plane and barring his return. If his fiancee’s plans to go to France fall through, they could be separated for years. I’m very, very sad but we feel he has made the right choice.

Going to neighbor’s BBQ/pool party on 4th. Today, we are taking the ferry into SF and going to walk around/play tourists and scout out potential apartments for Goskid #1’s return to the Bay in the fall–YAY!. The ferry is kind of a big deal…because the weekend ferries haven’t been running during Covid. We have missed this fun transit option in the last 1 1/2 years. And bonus–it’s free for the weekend!

Our friends decided not to come. :frowning: Disappointed, but I understand. They don’t want to get stuck in any potential evacuation traffic should Elsa do something surprising. She’s just a little too far out for them to make the call.

We just finished playing Dice Forge and set up plans to play Terraforming Mars with all the expansions tomorrow. That latter one is a long game with expansions so ought to provide a nice diversion for my mind.

Oh, and I won Dice Forge by 2 points so it’s setting a decent precedent! DIL was very close behind me, S not so much.

We should be able to see fireworks from here on our farm tonight and possibly tomorrow night. I haven’t looked at municipal schedules yet. The car race track usually sets some off too and we can also see those from home. The sound is off since all of the above are a few miles away, but it’s still nice to see them without traffic or crowds.

Pretty quiet weekend here. Today is a lazy day – reading , running some errands, picking up H’s tux for D’s wedding in August etc. Tomorrow we have golf and a BBQ with friends and Monday we’re having dinner out. Sadly, the fireworks in town have been cancelled this year.

@MaineLonghorn So sorry about your son’s visit. Maybe he can contact the airlines and get some kind of a credit even if they won’t give a refund. In any event, I’m glad he can get the vaccine and I hope he can visit soon.

Our cul-de-sac is having a party tonight, and it’s only in the 80s. Pretty remarkable for Dallas. I am currently in another city sitting on a bench in the hotel laundry room watching my clothes go around because my husband is in the hospital across the street.

H and I went for a drive today, ended up about 2.5 hours from home at a Mennonite run grocery/fabric/gift shop store. We spent some money there, found a restaurant for a late lunch and drove home.

Tomorrow will be a lazy day around home and Monday I will work since I do not get paid holidays (even though I am full time) and H has the day off so he’ll catch us up on laundry, etc.

Tons of fireworks all around us tonight - all of the major communities (at least 6 viewable from our farm) must have had theirs and then some local personal ones. It was pretty, but apparently no one actually celebrates July 4th any longer, which to me is quite disappointing, esp since Monday is a holiday for many.

Then again, few in our area celebrate Halloween on Oct 31st either. Most communities switch it to a different day, even when the 31st is a Friday or Saturday night.

I don’t get it.

We’d been invited to a pool party today, but it’s so cold and wet that it’s been put off to tomorrow (the 4th). It’s in the afternoon and then in the evening neighbors suggested a small pot luck. I’ve made the crusts and pitted cherries for two pies. Will put them in the oven tomorrow morning.

Our town postponed the 4th of July fireworks back in January to Labor Day weekend. In hindsight this might be the lowest the virus numbers get, but I can’t blame them for their decision. There’s a lot of grumbling about it on facebook websites.

Currently, we have no plans for the weekend. It’s been quiet and low key. I’m fine with that. We had meat delivered today by local butcher along with some bacon chili. It’s so homey having the butcher deliver local, organic, pasture-raised meat.

Tomorrow, we will get a box of locally-made pastries which includes some of the best croissants I’ve ever had anywhere.

Not sure about any other plans. Will see if anything evolves.

Beautiful! Where is this?

today; watching D16 play in her church’s band; picnic in the park with brother from out of state, helping out at community pool party; and watching area fireworks from the deck of a friends.

super low key here - so different from say 10 yrs ago when we had way younger kids and lots of family parties. But its OK! i’m over all the noise and explosions. our neighborhood is like a war-zone with fireworks. a house roof caught on fire 15 yrs ago; the family was gone; and we’ve always tried to stay nearby and in town after that.
