What're the two essays that MIT used last year?

I know about the end of the world one...what was the other one? and are they recycled from year to year?

The first essay was a choice of A or B - one was the end of the world, the other was about where you came from (family, hometown etc.). You had a choice to write either of those for 500 words.

There were also 2 short essays - one about activities, one about what you do for fun. There were additionally two optional long essays, one about something you've created and one about any topic you'd like. I don't know if they're the same topics from year to year - 2008 was the same as 2007, but maybe they'll rewrite them for 2009. I hope that helped!

2007 Essay A:
"Tell us about an experience which, at the time, really felt like "the end of the world" -- but had it not happened, you would not be who you are today. Describe the process through which you discovered value in the negative.

2007 Essay B:
"Describe the world you come from, for example your family, clubs, school, community, city, or town. How has that world shaped your dreams and aspirations?"

opkay! thanks. i think i'll do B. i don't happen to have an "end of the world" experience that doesn't seem whiney =P

These were the same essays as my year (2006, I guess - I'm class of 2011). However, now that there's a new dean, it's possible the application will change.

Bottom line: if you feel the urge to write an essay over the summer (I didn't, and I don't think it's at all necessary), do one of the Common Application ones that have already been determined...not an old MIT essay. But that's just my two cents.

(You can find the Common Application here.)

yah i'm also doing the common app essays. plus some supplements for schools like Stanford. do those supplement essays change?

I don't know if all the Stanford supplement essays change, but I know that at least one particular one stays the same. For that one, you write a note to your future roommate. I had that one (in 2007) and my sister had that one (in 2003).

If you're applying to UChicago, don't even bother trying to write the old ones. They change every year and the topics are really original and bizarre.

You should do one of the really broad questions of the CommonApp (I think it's the first question). You can reuse it for the 2nd MIT question (assuming that it doesn't change) and for other schools too (like U. of California, if you're applying to UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UC San Diego--those stay the same every year).

^^ the roommate one for Stanford is old (at least 10 years) and will probably stay. I would recommend doing Common App essays and old MIT ones (whether they change or not), at least for practice.
