What's a good college major to work for CIA or FBI?

I guess computer science, political science, psychology, math, econ, or arabic would do the job. what do u think?

CS or math were my first guesses too.

Depends on what you want to do.

I suggest picking a major you like and then deciding where you want to work.

The CIA can be very technical, depending on your job. Same idea with the NSA and probably with the FBI.

I am sure they accept all kinds of majors for all kinds of jobs. But if you are looking for the “interesting” stuff, I suggest math, computer sci, engineering, econ, or something around that ally.

Doesn’t the NSA choose you, not the other way around?

If you are interested in CIA, apply to Georgetown and get a CIA internship. I think that UCLA is a top CIA school too, I may be wrong about that though.

Oh don’t get in trouble either, if you get arrested you may never pass clearance.

Maybe. But the NSA has summer programs and internships, so I guess you could get in that way.

I know the NSA likes people with math skills. I think they try to recruit them.

Polisci is one of the tops for the cia. BUT to be a good candidate, they prefer a MA or higher. if you BA in arabic, you will get paid a lot- they desperately are searching for people who have studied the arabic language/ speak it. arabic is pretty hard, but if you think you can do it, definitely do so. i wish i could do it but i’m definitely not patient enough!

I wanna be a crimefighter and fight the bad guys! I think i would be a good interrogator. I always know when someone is lying or BSing (like when playing mafia, the card game lol).

Does the CIA usually recruit people from Berkeley?

Be careful, the CIA/NSA/FBI + espionage in general has been romanticized by popular culture. Your partner will not be a gorgeous 5’10’ woman who could pass as a supermodel and you will not have an Aston Martin everywhere you go.

Ya, torture is different from the Bond movies.

And there are probably not a lot of hot babes.

I think you should get a wetsuit and a baseball bat and go out and fight crime, Kick Ass style. No degree required.

anyone read confessions of an economic hitman?

the guy was suppose to be in the NSA. That stuff sounds crazy, too bad economist aren’t trained to kill, 007 style.

duplicate thread… everything you need to know is here:

Global Studies with concentration in Peace and Freedom or concentration in Governance & Conflict.

yes, they would definitely recruit from berkeley. in fact, they’d probably prefer it… (berkeley is usually considered very liberal and “hippie-ish”, so they would definitely look at an application that says uc berkeley with a lot of interest).

I am polisci at UCB and there is a DIA/CIA/NSA campus attache. Im sure the CS/ME/ETC have their own channels as well. As stated above, these organizations have huge scope, and for that reason, many many majors would be appropriate. On top of that, for some positions, major selection is not as important as their own placement process.

somebody i know refuses to smoke weed because he wants to work for the CIA and is afraid of the polygraph test.

@jersey LOL, have you been watching Chuck? i just watched season 1 and 2 and it’s such a cool show

I’d never want to have Top Secret security clearance. Moreover, I don’t even qualify for it AFAIK because I’m a Italian-American dual citizen (I’m not willing to give up my foreign passport either).

Whenever you travel, they keep track of where you go. The pay sucks, and there is limited growth. It’s also very boring - you’ll most likely end up in a cubicle. As long as you can breath into a mirror and see fog, you can earn your paycheck.

Additionally, it’s not as easy to get hired for the US government. Who wouldn’t want job stability, pension, and good benefits - right? Veterans also get preference.

And if you think waiting for admission decisions is bad, the period from applying for a position to getting one is about 6-10 months.

i have also wondered about FBI/CIA/NSA. good thread with good info : ]

ummm I’m just a junior in high school so, this will sound like a stupid question but um what should you major in to join the CIA and what you should major in to join NSA, (specific please!) and what extra skills are they looking for?
