What's a good GPA for Haas?

I just finished my first semester at Cal. By the time I apply for Haas, if my extracurriculars are average and my essays were average, how good would my GPA have to be? Is a 3.5+ enough?

If you live in cal thats good enough, if your an out-of-stater then its decent

I think tommyshum91 is answering another question. Anyway, you know that competition's fierce and there are people who have flawless GPAs who apply to Haas. I would say that you need to have a minimum of the average GPA of those that get in (around 3.7 from last year's admissions). Don't skimp on the ECs and the essays. It's Haas, it's competitive, I say that you should do the best you can in each area. But then again, this is just my opinion. I, myself, am waiting for decisions in February.

"I would say that you need to have a minimum of the average GPA of those that get in"

Huh? ~50% of the people who get into Haas have below average GPAs, by definition. In admissions, being at the admitted averages is a very, very good thing, all other things being equal. You only have to be above average if the other components of your applications are going to be below average. A 3.7 is what you should aim for, unless, again, your ECs are below average.

But...remember, only prereqs are important. That doesn't mean you should go and fail non-prereqs, but your GPA in prereqs is really what will count.

I'm also waiting for decisions in February. Counting the semester I just finished, my cumulative GPA will be around 3.7 and my ECs and essays should be fairly good. The only thing I'm worried about is my B- in Math 1A. However, later on I got an A in Math 16b (I know the first attempt is what counts but maybe they'll take that into consideration?). I also got an A in UGBA 10 and Econ 1, and I'm going to take Stat 21 this semester. Do I have a chance at getting in? Thanks.

A pretty good one, at that.

what kind of extracurricular activities do Haas applicants usually have? do they have to be business related?

Liquidus, though I don't know the entirety of your resume, those few stats that you have posted seem pretty solid. I wouldn't dwell too much on the B- in 1A--your A in BA10 and Econ 1 coupled with your 3.7 overall GPA amply make up for one deficient grade. Good luck!

go-backk, I pulled this from the Haas website:

Myth: Students must get an internship or join a business fraternity/club prior to applying to Haas.
Truth: The admission committee is looking for leadership potential in extra curricular activities and does not give certain activities more weight in the review process. Students should participate in what they enjoy (on-campus clubs, volunteer experience, work experience, religious activities, etc.)

thanks Def890!

so what kind of extracurriculars did some of you Haas applicants have (if you don't mind sharing)?

My son got a 3.06 GPA first semester. He had been planning on applying to Haas. He had a lot going on first semester with pledging a fraternity, playing volleyball and getting used to being on his own. Now this semester shouldn't be as crazy. If his grades improve will he have a chance to still get in? He has lined up an internship for the summer and might take one or two classes during summer school.

How can he do an internship AND summer school?

The internship will be during the first 6 or the last 6 weeks of summer and then intern during the other times. A friend of ours who worked at a Big 4 CPA firm who has his own practice now has offered him an internship.

Ah I see. Well your son still has 2 more semesters to go to improve his GPA, which is plenty of opportunity. If you look here:

Undergraduate Program - Admission Stats - Haas School of Business

The average GPA of enrolled students is 3.7 with the middle 80% between 3.49 and 3.92. The admission committee also looks at the grades of pre-req classes more than breadth classes.

That's what I thought. I know he can do better, but this was a tough semester for a first semester freshman. He should have fine EC's as he is playing VB and then he will have a leadership position at his fraternity and then also the internship. Hopefully with all that and whatever else he chooses to do he could have a chance.

Your son doesn't live at Ida Sproul does he? The room across the hall from me has a volleyball freshman player.

He used to. He's moving into his fraternity house this semester. He's already vacated the room. He really wanted to move into the frat house and it saves us a ton of money. I would have preferred he stay in the dorm for the year, but he deserved this opportunity. Also, he was in a triple.
