Whats a likely letter?

As i was going through the ivy league-post sections this morning, I found a lot of threads that consisted of very happy kids exclaiming that they got likely letters (mind you, these are year old posts). I was just wondering what a likely letter was, since I have never heard of one. Any responses would be great. thanks

i don't know if they send them out for ED applicants, but those are letters the admin sends you before the decision date telling you that you're most likely going to be accpted (unless there is some factor that they may find out about you like drugs or failing grades to later prevent them from admiting you). the reason for these letters is just their way to tell you that you have amazing stats and that they really want to to go to their school for this reason (so that if you do use one of those ivies as a saftey, you'll probably feel guilty not going there). does that make some sense?

likely letters are for RD applicants most of the time (never heard of one for an ED applicant). My bro got one for Penn in March when he applied (eight years ago). They do it because the lagtime between deadline and decision date is 3-4 months vs. 6 weeks for ED

thanks a lot guys ,that helped a ton. Well I guess i wont feel bad now when i dont get my likely letter from penn (ed) ;)

well likely letters are certain acceptances.... ivy league schools are not allowed to send their decision letters before a certain date so they use this as an alternative to woo applicants

How likely are you to get a likely letter?
