What's area like?

Thinking of making a visit to Goucher. Is campus in a bubble of sorts or is there city/school interaction? Thought it was in Baltimore, but appears to be in Towson. Any thoughts on area would be very much appreciated.

Goucher is located in Towson, which is an unincorporated community in Baltimore. It is in Baltimore, but not the downtown Baltimore that you may have imagined. It’s 20 minutes north of downtown (an easy drive and well worth the trip into the city).

Towson is a great community and its downtown is in walking distance to Goucher. Goucher’s campus is beautiful, so one feels like they are away from it all when on campus. But a walk away, is Towson Place shopping mall, which is huge and has so many shopping options from Forever 21 caliber right on up to a Louis Vuitton store, and everything in between.

Also a walk away, one of the streets in downtown Towson is gated off on Thursdays, from June until Thanksgiving. During the day they hold a Farmer’s Market and at night the restaurants have outdoor dining on the side walk, while live music is played on the street.

There are restaurants, and movie theater and many businesses within walking distance to Goucher. Goucher is part of the collegetown shuttle and one can pick up the shuttle to eliminate the walk, or to go further into the city.

Fells Point and Inner Harbor, which are in the city, are both very nice to enjoy. Restaurants, boutiques, coffee houses, bars, etc, make for a very nice visit. These again are a 20 minute drive away and can be reached by taking the college town shuttle.

Belevedere Square is another great destination. We live 6 hours from Goucher, and we make it to Atwater’s Market each and every trip to Baltimore. Before we begin our trip back home, we make a stop there for snacks for the ride, as well as wonderful fresh food to bring home for the work week ahead.

One of the reasons our daughter chose Goucher was because she wanted to have access to a city, but have a college campus to retreat to for comfort and safety. This was just one of the reasons, and this goals was met easily.

She also chose Goucher for their strong dance program, which is available to students who are not necessarily going to major in dance. All students can take dance classes and audition for pieces, where some other terrific college dance programs limit participation to dance majors only.

Another reason she chose Goucher was for the small class size, with professors who get to know their students.

She is a Biology major, in her senior year. I am happy to look back and see that all of her goals, set during the college selection process 4 years ago, have been met at Goucher. I strongly suggest you visit the campus and leave enough time to stop into Fells Point and Inner Harbor. Good luck in your search!
