whats better for a premed ut or univeristy of houston

i know that university of texas is a much better school overall. but my thing is i live in houston. i am probably going to major in biomedical enginering or biochemistery. I am currently going to a community college in kingwood looking to transfer this spring or fall. i would love to go to ut but i dont want to pay the high cost for dorms. so i was wondering if it would be better to attend ut if i am going to major in those things. also would i have a beter chance when applyin to texas medical schools if i go to ut.

have u considered RICE??

i might not be good enough for that i will try though kind sir.

kind sir?? r u high!!!!

bump!!! does anybody have any ideas or info to share?

Well I think if you want to go onto post undergrad eg. med school then you should go to the place where you can attain the highest GPA. Now in Texas the University of Houston is not a bad school, however, if you want to go outside of Texas for Med school it would be a smart decision to invest the extra money for name recognition, prestige, and most importantly a college that is more nationally renowned in the fields you are studying as well as other fields that you may transfer into... being realistic. If you have your heart set med school and staying in Texas go to UofH and get a high GPA. If you are a little indecisive about your future and are looking for one of the best overall educational experiences, that obviously can be narrowed down in the future, I would highly recommend UT.

you should really consider Baylor if you're looking at pre-med

Is your question a joke? UH is a fine school if you don't have the means to leave Houston. If you do, there is absolutely no reason at all why you should even CONSIDER UH if you can get in to UT.

Rice would be #1, UT #2, TAMU #3, and Baylor might slide in there at #4.

yeah thats what i was thinking my plans are to stay in texas and apply for med schools here. i was really considering uh honor school vs ut natural science college. i understand the prestige is a lot higher at ut but i am mainly focused in on medical school. so if that is my case where do you think i will have an overall better learning experience and overall a better shot at med schools. Also i heard that ut has a lot of affiliations with lost of med schools in texas and also if you have 2 applicants with almost the same stats the prestige of the school counts some what. i understand that if your grades and mcat are good it really dosent matter about the university but take all that out of account. is it really worth the extra 8 grand a year at ut vs the honors college at uh?
please do not flame i am just asking opinion and ideas.

Baylor for me is way out of reach, it is mainly between ut and uh honors.

Yes it really is worth an extra 8 grand.

And don't be too sure about Rice/Baylor being out of reach if you are talking about financially. Baylor is pretty generous with scholarship packages and they also have need-based aid.

You will not, regardless of your income level, get a great aid package at UT. UT likes to give out large ammounts of loans.

But for a Texas resident, UT is hands down the best bargain in the country, even at full price, so I'd take that up.

why is baylor way out of reach? just curious

JuanEatsPandas Like i was mentioning earlier i would also like to be close to my family. I live in Houston and if i go to ut austin i will be only 3 hour drive away, meaning i could visit on weekends. I also think that it is going to cost more to attend baylor because it is a private university. Granted they give many scholarships but they are mainly aimed toward freshman. I am going to start my second year and i have a 3.5 gpa which is so so and i don't know if it will get me a lot of scholarships for the private institution. another reason that i didnt choose Baylor is because people with a baylor degree dont have any pluses at Baylor medical school. so all that made my decision about baylor so now it really boils down to ut austin or uh honors college. We visited UT Austin and loved it although we did get lost many times. We visited uh and didn't like the campus overall but loved the honors college. It was a university inside a university which seemed very promising. They told me they know many alumni that went to medical school from there. So i am not sure between the two. theloneranger i am going to try my best at rice but with my stats i am not sure because i am a transfer and a 3.5 gpa might be too low for rice but i am going to try applying there because they accept people who are diverse instead of 4.0 gpa but i wanna stay realistic. i know that Baylor is very generous with need based aid but when i was looking i calculated i am still going to have to pay more then what i will at ut. and theloneranger you are right i am leaning more towards UT Austin than honors college in Houston but i just wanted some more opinions.

i dont know myself!!! tell me when u make up ur mind!!!

hello mr bilaldar42 i am really thinking ut over uh honors but i am waiting for opinions from fellow college confidential people.

any more ideas or opinions guys?

You may do better at UH than at UT, because your family will be closer for support emotionaly and financially. As long as your gpa and mcat are very high it doesn't matter if you go to UT or UH Honors.

The $8,000 cost a year may feel like an extra burden on you and your family. You need to not have to worry about finances. I know I came from a very poor family and juggled 2-3 jobs sometimes to get through.

Go where you feel the most comfortable.

Good Luck! You'll be successful wherever you go!

amom2 thanks for the reply really apericiate it. i was thinking the same thing about uh being financially better and that i dont have to worry about any jobs, but then again i am paranoid that ut will give me a much better education which will greatly help me on the mcat. anyother ideas opinons guys?

all u need to do is to APPLY!!! GODD!!!

bump........ any other ideas opinions???

AAMC: FACTS Table 2: Undergraduate Institutions Supplying Applicants to U.S. Medical Schools, by Applicant Race and Ethnicity, 2007

look at this information. UT is always in the top 10, if not top 4-5 for all races except for african-americans (but probably only because the historically black colleges have a higher proportion), so UT is definitely a great place to go for pre-med if you can survive. The fact that you can get residency and not only have access to numerous medical schools (many of which are top-notch), but also have the advantage of them being 95% instate is really appealing. I'd say UT is better than Houston, but if you think you'll get better grades at Houston, go for it!
