If a student is among top few in a big competitive school, does it effect their chances of admissions into selective colleges if their school doesnt do ranking? Positively or negatively?
Many schools have done away with ranking precisely for this reason. A student ranked 11-20 at a highly competitive school may be more ready for a selective college than a student in the top 1-10 at a less competitive school. Not ranking is common, and you can look at a school’s common data set to see the numbers. Often some indication, such as decile, is sent, along with the profile. That with GPA and standardized scores allows admissions counselors to determine if a student is a good fit. If a student is in the top few in a big competitive school that will come across in the overall application package even if not explicitly stated.
It is a non-issue as far as I have seen. The guidance counselor and teachers will discuss the student’s outstanding performance in recommendations and the college will see the transcript which includes both grades and course rigor. Our HS does not rank and the best students get into the very top schools.
