Hey guys and/or gals! I just got accepted into UC Irvine unexpectedly (since the decisions were supposed to come out in March, but whateves!). It’s not my top UC school, but I am still really excited about getting accepted.
However, I have not been able to visit it yet, so I was wondering if you could give me any input on what everything is like, including the surrounding area, the party scene, the actual campus, academics, or anything else you can think of!
To start, Irvine is a large ultra safe city, next to Newport Beach, half an hour from Disneyland, about an hour in good traffic (rare) to Los Angeles, about 2 hours to San Diego. Beautiful weather year round!
I’m planning on going into biological sciences. And that sounds like an excellent location! Especially since I am currently trapped in the freezing weather of the midwest haha
You’ll definitely appreciate the weather transition from the midwest to sunny SoCal.
Also be prepared to be surrounded by lots of Asians, good restaurants, and beautiful beaches!
Congratulations on your acceptance!
The campus itself is on the side of a hill. Biking it is not too easy until you are on some of the flat areas. There is a grocery and strip-like mall across the main road. It is a car-oriented campus, so everywhere you go, (Disneyland), is by car. It tends to be a commuter campus. As an OOS student, your fees will run $55K per year.
My son is a Junior at UCI. He is an out of state student, lived on campus his first year, off campus last 2. Tuition is 36,000 a year, and his rent is $900 a month… but we are hoping this opportunity launces his success. He’s in the Business school and the networking opportunities are strong. He loves the Irvine area so much that he has stayed even through summer and has only been home for “visits”. It’s a highly academic institution, not a lot of “partying”… but as parents we encouraged the idea “every school doesn’t offer this level of intellectual foundation with like minded students… you can find a party anywhere”. And so far, so good, he’s on track to graduate early!! Good luck!
