Absolutely not. I loved FAU.

Something you need to keep in mind is that most people who complain do so on forums like this while most of the people who really enjoyed the experience don’t post here.

Depending on what your course schedule is like, college can absolutely be stressful. For instance, if you’re taking four science classes and also working 20-30 hours a week, your life is going to be very stressful. If you’re taking Education or Sociology classes and have no job or other outside commitments, life’s going to be a little easier.

And just like high school, some teachers are better than others. Some load you down with a lot of work, some coast by. Some are very responsive to students, some just get through the day so they can get back to what they truly care about: their research. This happens at every university.

The one part I might agree with is the affordability of South Florida. Boca Raton is an upscale town, so you’ll commonly come across $1,200+/month rents and $15 dinners, but once you get here and start exploring you’ll discover that there’s quite a bit you can do within the college budget. Night Owl has cheap drinks, the bowling alley has quarter game nights, plenty of free events on campus, not to mention there are restaurants that either have cheap food (e.g. $5 sandwich/chips/drinks at 620-Subs) or give you an FAU student discount (10% off Denny’s). Nobody starves here, believe me. And if you’re willing to spend, well, what you spend right now when you go out for food with friends, you’re going to get some pretty damn good food here in Boca. We have lots of great restaurants here!

I got involved on campus, I knew people who lived on campus, I went to a ton of basketball and football games (and still go, as an alumnus), I went to comedy shows, Homecoming, bonfires, Timucua Pageant, foam parties, house parties… maybe I just lucked out… or maybe I just tried to have a good time, and did.

Good luck and Go Owls!
