I know this is going to come off like a non-answer but that’s a tough question because you can’t really paint everybody with the same brush. Everyone’s experience is different. It really depends on your expectations, your flexibility and your willingness to get involved.

For some people, FAU’s exactly what they expected or better. Many come for the weather, the beach and the girls. A lot of these people didn’t really care what the college was like, just that they were in college, and they’d make the best of it.

Other people, expecting it to be like the experience at a 100 year old institution like UF, UMichigan or Ohio State, may be disappointed. FAU just celebrated its 50th birthday and while it has made tremendous strides - football stadium, thousands of students on campus, the Boca Raton mayor saying the city is becoming a college town - there are still things we need to accomplish: Greek housing, a huge Student Union and more FAU-centric bars/restaurants near campus would probably be the top three on the wishlist.

These things take time (and lots of money) to develop. Older schools had the luxury of time and can offer those things. FAU is still working on it.

You can (and should) have an awesome time here. I did. I know a lot of other people who are loving it right now. But like I said, it depends on your expectations of your FAU experience.

Same thing with criminal justice. FAU’s not “known” for criminal justice the way they’re known for ocean engineering, for instance. If you want to be a police officer, absolutely. If you’re hoping to use it to get into a law school, yes, if you work hard you can do that, plus there’s a Pre-law club here (and faculty, obviously) to support that dream.

However, if you want to go from FAU to Yale Law… I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

Then again, that would be a longshot from any school.
