What's Montclair's audition day like?

My D has an on-campus MT audition at Montclair coming up. Have any parents or students been through the audition day? Just curious how big a “cattle call” it is.

My D auditioned on campus. Its was relatively quick. You check in at the desk and wait in a hallway with the other audionees for your name to be called. My D did her dance call first with a large group. Then changed for her songs/monologues and waited. They called the kids in small groups to go for the monologues/songs…and then you’re done. No info session or tours or anything like that. Papermill happened to be doing auditions there on the same day so it was a busy place that day!

By far was the least favorite of my D’s eighteen auditions. Zero interaction to the point of being rude. Some of the kids saw the dance call audition form that included a weight spec, “under weight,” “over weight,” “ideal weight.” My D’s friends saw the auditioner scratch out “ideal weight” that one auditioner had checked and then check “over weight.” The girl was devastated and was barely able to complete the dance call. Hopefully next year they will figure out a way to be discrete with their type casting—which we realize is a part of this business, but does not have to be so in-your-face.

Looking at this school for my D. Any info. about how many students they accept, how many audition? How about from parents with current students attending? My D is looking for a well-rounded experience. She has a generous spirit and is looking for like-minded performers.

@atypicalstagemom , I would go through and read all the threads about Montclair, as well as search it in the forum. You may find many of your questions answered. They accept I think 3-5% but it might be less now that they offer in-state tuition to all MT’s. My daughter graduated last year.

My S was just accepted this year to their MT program. The head of the program told us they did 800 auditions to yield a class of 16 so much lower now than in previous years. More like 1-2%.
