On campus auditions

Montclair state is one of my D top schools, and we’re trying to decide whether to do this audition on campus or at unifieds . Proximity to NYC makes it easy to get to. To those who’ve auditioned on campus: does the on campus day include an info session, tour, sitting in on classes, and anything else that makes traveling to the school special, or is it just a: come on campus, audition, and goodby kind of day? Any info would be appreciated

Since no one who auditioned on campus has answered you (my daughter auditioned at Unifieds), from what I heard about this past year’s auditions, the day was more of an audition-and-go kind of day. That’s what it was like for most of my daughter’s on-campus auditions, though a few gave brief tours. In our experience the going to classes, etc. was reserved more for kids who have been accepted and are in the decision phase. However, my advice would be to pick up the phone and call Clay James. Especially if it is a top choice and you are coming a long distance, maybe he could set up more for you.

Audition day is - come on campus, audition and good-bye. No info session or anything else. While I think sitting in on classes should be reserved for those accepted students, a brief info session is always nice.

Their website says that on-campus auditions are strongly encouraged. Do they consider those who audition on-campus more interested than those why audition at Unifieds, and, therefore, admit more people who audition on-campus?

I really don’t think so. Being “interested” is not what they’re looking for, though I suppose theoretically that if 2 applicants were otherwise completely equal yet one was more enthusiastic, that could make a difference. At one time Montclair didn’t have dance auditions at Unifieds (only on campus) so for that reason on-campus may have been preferred, but my understanding is that last year they had a dance audition at Unifieds. Also, going to campus is recommended so that the applicant has a chance to see the campus and community. The one thing I would recommend about Montclair is audition early because admissions are rolling, and once the class is filled, it’s filled.

I didn’t realize that it’s rolling. That’s good to know; thanks!
