What's More Attractive to B-Schools?

Rank these schools in attractiveness to B-Schools: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, UPenn (Wharton), Duke.

I'd say Wharton is a notch above, with Duke a notch below the others.

they are all amazing

its not really a good idea to choose your undergrad college based on where you think you can get into b school afterward... its an especially bad idea if those are your 4 choices, there is no weakness in them.

They're all great schools. But in my opinion, I'd go for a Wharton undergrad degree. After Wharton, I'm aiming to get a Harvard mba. We'll see how much I like studying after the next four years.

anyone else have any opinions?

Don't choose a college based on which one you think will help get you into b-school. That's silly because b-school is so far down the road and a lot can change between now and then. Which leads me to #2.

Don't assume that because you want an MBA now (when you are 17 or 18) that you will want one 10 years later (most top b-school programs have average ages betweenn 26-28). You might decide during college that you don't want an MBA and instead want to pursue a different graduate degree. Or you might start working and realize that you don't need an MBA (like 65% of Wharton grads).

The thing that will matter the most is that you have significant and impressive work experience, and you can get that coming from any top college. However, I think Wharton students do have an edge in the job market because they have more significant academic preparation in areas of business, and because of the Wharton alumni network.

So, pick a school based on more important factors, like what you want to study, where you feel most comfortable, whether you want to be in a city or suburb, etc.

going into this thread, i thought it would be easier for HYP students to get into business school (or a good job) than it would be for wharton students. so your saying im wrong?

Why would it be easier for HYP students to get into a b-school or get a job than Wharton students?

All of them will get good jobs, although I think Wharton students have a leg up with jobs - especially in certain areas as many recruiters come here before they go anywhere else.

65% of Wharton students don't go back for an MBA, so they are going to be less represented in MBA programs in general.

I don't really understand what you are trying to get at.

basically, i just thought that since it is harder to get into HYP, it would be easier for those people to suceed and get into a business school/ get a good job. the reason im so curious about this is that i really like wharton, but i wanna make sure that it wouldn't hurt me in the long run if i chose to go there as a opposed to one of the other three.

Getting in to Wharton is marginally easier to do than getting in to HYP.

And trust me, you will not be hurt at all by going to Wharton. Especially when it comes to things like job placement.

And, to be honest, employers really donm't put that much wieght on a college admissions officer's decision four years earlier, they find the accomplishments in college much more important than which college you attended.

Admissions can sometimes be random. Your college transcript is not.

As for recruitment to the business world straight out of college, nothing beats Wharton.

yea... i def agree with everyone.. dont base your schools on prestige.. go by feel!!!!!!! so basically, i dont really care what you guys say.. cause no matter what people argue is better for MBAs/ jobs, im gonna apply go to the place where i think that i will have the best time as i spend 4 years of my life!!!!!!!!!

werent you just saying that you were concerned that youd have better opportunities at HYP watchadoing...which is totally untrue...but thats besides though point...pick one..you either care about prestige or you dont..lol

from what I have read, (this is specifically about investment banking) Wharton students have done much better than students from harvard/princeton/yale or anywhere else as they are much more prepared for it

Business schools care mostly about your work experience (i.e. the prestige of the firm you are working at) and your GMAT score more than they care about your undergraduate school.

But if you wanna try to connect some dots, a Wharton education might lead you to a better job in a more prestigious company...........better b-school? maybe

lishnik: yea thats what i said before.. but i realized prestige is overrated, especcially when comparing four great schools like upenn, harvard, princeton, and yale
