Well I'm definitely interested in Columbia and I think I have a decent shot, but I'm limited on the number of apps I can submit and I really need to know what the Columbia App entails before I fork over $75 to get the other half of the application. I'm sure there's an essay or two. Can anyone please detail the part 2 of the online application for me? I applied to a skool EA so I have about two solid essays ready and this would definitely help me out.

Thanks in advance :]

Download the paper application.

If you’ve filled out the Common App, Columbia’s app is very similar. You fill out your school information, classes, activities, test scores, etc.

There is one essay, which is 250-500 words and can be about nearly anything - you write about a life experience that shows who you are. Here’s the official prompt:

“Write an essay which conveys to the reader a sense of who you are. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to, experiences which have shaped your life, the circumstances of your upbringing, your most meaningful intellectual achievement, the way you see the world - the people in it, events great and small, everyday life - or any personal theme which appeals to your imagination. Please remember that we are concerned not only with the substance of your prose but with your writing style as well. We prefer that you limit yourself to approximately 250-500 words (or 1-2 pages).”

There’s a very short answer where you write about your most significant activity, only 300 characters. You get 300 characters to describe what you did last summer, and another 300 characters for the summer before that. Another 300 characters for each of the following: books you read this year for pleasure, favorite books you read for school, publications you read regularly, and favorite shows/exhibits/concerts. Those are really lists, not short answers. There’s 300 characters on “why Columbia,” and if you’re applying to the Fu Foundation School, 600 characters on “why engineering.” Finally, there’s also a spot for writing to explain if you’ve ever been suspended, etc.

Hope that helped and good luck! :)

300 characters on “why Columbia”?? or did you mean 300 words?
(yea I haven’t submitted part 1 yet either… and won’t until I hear back from earlies)

um so just one essay?.. awesome

It really is 300 characters, so not long at all. Mine was only a few sentences. And yup, it’s just one “official” essay, the rest are all 300 character short answers.

Would Columbia be ****ed off if I told them I had been suspended and used that spot to submit another essay? Lol…

Seriously I have no idea what to put in just one essay…
