Hi I’m interested in UR. Can someone share with me ur experience at Richmond? How’s the school and academic in general? I also want to study business next year so can you guys tell me about its business program?
Just a little concern, lately I’ve heard about a rape case here and some opinions on how badly the school handled with it… So is it safe here?.. Sorry, the question may sound stupid but yeah I’m just concerned. Thanks.
Apologies that no one’s responded yet.
UR is a great school and the academics are rigorous, but free from competition between students. Classes are very collaborative in nature and you can get individualized attention very easily due to the small class sizes (the largest class I had was 33 people, and that was one of the largest classes being offered that semester). The business school is also highly regarded; I’m in a business student, so unfortunately I don’t know much about the program itself.
Socially, I’ve had a great time at UR. I have a lot of friends from the performing arts, and most of my core group of friends doesn’t drink, so we’ll do things like hold our own movie nights on friday nights, as well as go to events that are hosted on campus for those who don’t wish to partake in greek life (and these substance free events have huge numbers attending).
I’d rather not comment on the specific cases in the recent news stories, but what I will say is UR is very safe. UR takes sexual assault allegations seriously and really cares for and supports sexual assault survivors, as well as having huge education initiatives to prevent sexual assault from happening in the first place.
Finally someone did reply to me Thanks for your answer tho now I do have a clearer look on UR. Guess I’m gonna apply for UR by ED round!!
Also how’s the alumni network? Do you guys find great internships or jobs offered while studying in/ graduating from here?
The alumni network is great! For my major (CS), alums come to campus all the time to recruit for their employers (such as Google). Federal agencies come to recruit (such as FBI and CIA), and so do big consulting firms (like Deloitte).
Almost all of my friends that have wanted one, have found internships, most of the time through help of the career center/recruitment events here. Most of my friends that have graduated had job offers well before graduation date. I had a great internship this summer, but I didn’t go through the school to find it; I had a specific internship in mind (I found it by looking at the website of where I wanted to work).
Hi! I’m a current senior and I’ll tell you that the academics are quite hard. I got a 31 on the ACT and had a great GPA/ECs in high school which led me to get into UR… but I have to work really hard for a 3.3 GPA in the b-school here. (As a side-note, college GPAs are interpreted differently than HS GPAs, in case you didn’t know that).
The alumni network is also AMAZING. I interned in NYC this past summer & met with alumni at Google, WSJ, and other top companies. Career Services (ranked #8 by Princeton Review) does an amazing job of teaching you how to network and figure out your career path. I have a younger sibling at a top 10 college who has actually relied on me for advice on how to network/get great internships because their career services wasn’t much help.
The study abroad opportunities are also insane, and you can even get additional financial aid if the city you’re going to is expensive. We have UR students going to Oxford, LSE, Bocconi, (and also some going to party schools abroad… lol).
As far as safety, Richmond overall has a very safe campus. There is also a more progressive vibe at this school which led to plenty of outrage & subsequent administrative action after the mishandling of rape cases came out. President Crutcher has now pledged to create a special student center that will serve to help victims and further prevent sexual misconduct. The stats about rape in college are truly sobering, but I am so glad that the school isn’t sweeping it under the rug.
For social life, Greek life is pretty big, but as a sorority woman, I have plenty of friends in other sororities or who aren’t affiliated at all. Of course, some srats are more snooty than others, but there are tons of nice, normal people here, regardless of affiliation. Additionally, there are plenty of opportunities to join student leadership, special interest clubs, or professional organizations.
Overall, coming from a hometown that’s 600+ miles from UR, I sometimes wish I were at a larger school so that whenever i said “I go to the University of Richmond,” people would know the school. But the truth is, that lots of people, especially professionals in business, know the school and I’ve had countless people say to me “Oh, that’s a great school!” or “Oh, they have a great business school!”.
Hope that helps!
@isabee1 thank you for your response!!! It’s really helpful. Too bad I haven’t logged in here for a while so I didn’t see your comment earlier… Great news is I applied as an Early Decision candidate to UR!!! It seems like the system is really busy right now, I havent got access to my portal yet but still very excited waiting for the result day!!!
UR’s bschool seems to be competitive and it does demand much from the students. I hope that If I’m admitted, maybe I can learn something from you cuz from what I’m seeing, you are a really hard-working one
